The effects and consequences of depressive illness are as serious as those of physical illness, disability, and injury, sometimes more so. Do you know somebody who is suffering? Would you like to help them, but don't know how? This booklet might provide some of the answers. It does not set out to offer treatment or a cure - that is a matter for the Medical Profession. What it does offer is help and support for those who, in their turn, are helping and supporting the sufferer. The simple techniques described are neither unique nor exclusive, but have been developed over many years of experience as a Family Doctor, during which time they have been found to be an effective adjunct to professional care. This booklet has also been used as a training aid for new recruits of the local branch of 'The Samaritans.'

Combined with a fascinating travelogue and many interesting anecdotes this book aspires to establish a bridge across the gap existing between people of similar ideas and principles, but who are separated by different religions, denominations or ideology and includes those who do not profess allegiance to any formal religious group. Acknowledging the need for tolerance and humility it sets out to establish a common ground for all men and women of goodwill who are active in the pursuit of their ideals, irrespective of the fundamental individual beliefs with which they happen to have been brought up or which they have acquired through personal experience. It does not set out to challenge the opinions and beliefs of others but rather to seek out areas of agreement. All profits will go to The Restoration and Development Fund of St Mary's Church, Nantwich.

'Apple pie' is an autobiography tending towards a mini-saga as it includes memories covering a total of 160 years. It creates a fascinating insight into 20th Century middle-class English life, much of which provides interesting comparison with that of the 21st Century. The author, Rick Appleton, is a retired Family Doctor, living with his wife Gill in Nantwich, Cheshire. They have 4 children and 9 grandchildren.
