Lazy Lama looks at The Six Paramitas

"I think everything that we need to improve our world, our society and our humanity is in the Six Paramitas. These practices can make our lives good temporarily, as well as bringing lasting peace and happiness. This is an approach based on compassion, on wishing to help not only myself, but all of us together. The attitude is not "I and you," but "me and we." Someone who has the courage or heart for this approach is called a Bodhisattva; and this awakening is not only of yourself, but of everybody." The Six Paramitas, or "transcendent perfections," contain all the skills needed for taming the mind and opening the heart. Paramita is a Sanskrit word. Para means "beyond" and "the further shore" and mita, means "that which has arrived." So, broadly speaking, Pāramitā, means "that which has gone to the further shore." For beginners, "the further shore" seems very far away. We can feel overwhelmed before we even set out. But in this, the eighth book of the Lazy Lama series, Ringu Tulku Rinpoche helps us to understand how the path of the bodhisattva is possible for all of us. In providing this wonderful bridge on the journey from here to the further shore, Rinpoche reveals the Six Paramitas as bodhicitta in action, rather than an unattainable state of perfection. Through his wisdom and great compassion, warm humour and unfailing patience, Rinpoche shows us how these profound teachings are essential to our lives, especially in these times of stress and great uncertainty.
Chenrezig - The Practice of Compassion
Ringu Tulku Rinpoche's commentary on the shortest and most popular Chenrezig sadhana that was composed by Thangtong Gyalpo. "Chenrezig - or Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit - is the name of the bodhisattva who is regarded as the Lord of Compassion or the embodiment of compassion. Chenrezig practice is done in order to develop our own compassion. From the Buddhist point of view, we can try to generate compassion through changing or re-thinking our attitude and working on our way of perceiving things. Then there's another way, which is the one I will mainly explain here, and that is through feeling; it's an experiential, emotional approach."All profits received by Rigul Trust from the sale of this book will go to fund Rigul Trust health, education and poverty relief projects. This will help to bring benefit to all the children, the teachers, the cooks, the health clinic, the doctor, his assistant, the nurse, and all the people in Rigul, Tibet.See rigultrust.org

This small accessible book contains the essence of the Seven-Point Mind Training, expressed in the intimate colloquial style that distinguishes Ringu Tulku's teachings. The Seven-Point Mind Training, a lojong practice, assumes no prior special training or preparation. It does not require practitioners to enter seclusion or change the way they live their lives. It asks that they examine their relationships with all those around them and make a strong determination to become enlightened for others' sake rather than for their own. It gives instructions for tonglen breathing practice that ties the concepts of lojong to the physical act of breathing. "Mind Training" focuses simply on giving up, self-cherishing, and transforming self-centered thinking into compassion, egoistic feelings into altruism, desire into acceptance, and resentment into joy.

The Tibetan Buddhist teachings on the freedom that comes from perceiving the emptiness of all phenomena--teachings known collectively by the name Mahamudra--are presented here with remarkable clarity through commentary on a twelfth-century text. The text is "Gampopa's Great Teachings to the Assembly," by Gampopa, the foremost disciple of the legendary figure Milarepa and founder of Tibetan Buddhism's Kagyu school. The commentary is by Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, a contemporary teacher of deep learning and profound practice with a remarkable gift for presenting these traditional teachings in a way that is accessible to Western hearts and minds. Gampopa in his teaching combined the general Mahayana teachings he received from the Kadampa tradition of Atisha with the quintessential Vajrayana teachings, which he received from his teacher, Milarepa. These became the basis of the Kagyu lineage teachings that he founded. This particular text, which includes both Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings, is representative of the classic teachings of the Kagyu tradition in general.

The teachings are based on the short sadhana of White Tara written by Tenga Rinpoche, with a new English translation of the text. Many questions and answers are included to clarify the practice; and Ringu Tulku's characteristic descriptions, which relate the practice firmly back to ourselves and our lives, as we are right now, are invaluable. All profits from the sale of this book go to Rigul Trust to help fund health care, education and poverty relief projects, particularly in Ringu Tulku's homeland of Rigul.See: www.rigultrust.org
