Benjamin Glass är 18 år och tycker att livet mest är komplicerat. Sedan hans farmor hamnat på sjukhus bor han ensam, jobbar i mataffären och odlar sin bacillskräck. När han möter en herrelös hund som slickar honom på handen och följer honom hem får han panik. Det sista han vill är att ta hand om en hund, han som knappt vill gå ut och tänk på alla baciller! Men take away-killen Leonard känner igen hunden, som är värd massor av pengar, och berättar om hans ljusskygga ägare. Plötsligt tvingas Benjamin tänka på någon annan, för vem ska rädda Gary? Han måste lämna sin trygga bubbla, ta ohygieniska risker, möta farliga och mäktiga män och konfrontera sina värsta rädslor. Hund är en roman om att våga utmana sig själv och om hur en oväntad bästis kan vara det som får livet att plötsligt verka värt att leva.
