Sweet Land of Liberty?

Sweet Land of Liberty?

Robert Cook

Routledge
1997
nidottu
A powerful and moving account of the campaign for civil rights in modern America. Robert Cook is concerned less with charismatic leaders like Martin Luther King, and more with the ordinary men and women who were mobilised by the grass-roots activities of civil-rights workers and community leaders. He begins with the development of segregation in the late nineteenth century, but his main focus is on the continuing struggle this century. It is a dramatic story of many achievements - even if in many respects it is also a record of unfinished business.

Fear and Intimidation: Reaching out to Muslims about Christ
In the early eighties, the second Muslim I ever met threatened to kill me because he thought I was making fun of his god while I was asking another Muslim about the first Palestinian intifada (the many suicide bombings) in Israel. Little did I know then that I would ever study Islam and the Quran and write a book about the two subjects. Muslims are "commanded" in the Quran to believe in all the books/revelations that Allah has sent down to all mankind, which include the Old and New Testaments. Though Islamic scholars and Imams teach that the Old and New Testaments are corrupted and therefore should not be studied. The Quran says nothing at all about the Word of Allah as being corrupted. In fact, the Quran states that Allah "preserves his word." So when Muslims refuse to read or study the Bible, they are rejecting the word of Allah In this book, the Quran and the Bible are quoted throughout, covering subjects like how the Quran actually glorifies Jesus above Muhammed by declaring that Jesus was a faultless man. A faultless man is a perfect man, which is more than just a man, because no man who has ever lived on the earth has been faultless except Jesus. This book is an effort to inform all, including Muslims, about Islam and the Quran so that we may better understand the fastest growing religion in the world and to give Christians what they need to know about Islam in their efforts to reach out to Muslims.

Once, Southampton was a medieval town borough and a thriving port. Now it is a glittering city, having risen like the proverbial phoenix from wartime ruins. Sadly the once great liner traffic did not rise again with it. Like the rest of Britain, Southampton had to find a new identity. This collection of photographs, enriched by Robert Cook's captions, charts the challenges and changes up to the present day, and a world in which there are no easy answers.

Luton Past & Present gives a fascinating insight into the dramatic changes that have taken place in the city during the 20th century. The book recalls houses and public buildings, shops, factories and pubs that have vanished or been changed almost beyond recognition. The pictures show changing types of transport and fashion, and the developing character of streets and districts as they took on the form that is familiar today. The astonishing periods of growt that occurred during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, and since the Second World War, are particularly well illustrated. Many aspects of the changing city are recalled – hospitals and schools, places of work and recreation, parks and squares, suburban streets and the main thoroughfares – and the pictures record the ceaseless building and rebuilding that characterizes the city today.
