The Courage to Doubt

The Courage to Doubt

Robert Davidson

The Hebrew Bible is, in part, a history of individuals who, in order to retain faith in God, were led to rebel against and question what was being confidently affirmed about God. Jacob, Moses. Jeremiah and the authors of many of the Psalms are obvious examples. Robert Davidson tracks this important theme as it emerges in the patriarchal, Mosaic, and prophetic traditions of the Hebrew Bible. He helps the reader see that this theme is particularly relevant today when many, even within the believing community, find themselves forced to question and doubt, and often do so with unnecessarily guilty consciences.
Genesis 1-11

Genesis 1-11

Robert Davidson

Cambridge University Press
1973
pokkari
Chapters 1–11 of Genesis are like a poetic prologue to the early history of the Jewish people and to their religion. For Christianity also they later fulfil a similar purpose. Professor Davidson takes these chapters as a separate unity, comments on them, and explains their religious significance and their place in the Bible as a whole. Introductory sections on the sources and purpose of the book, and the meaning of myth, lead straight into the text and commentary which alternate with each other in the style of the series.
Genesis 12-50

Genesis 12-50

Chapters 12-50 of the book of Genesis may be considered as enshrining the patriarchal traditions of the Jewish people. Besides the elements of poetry and legend embodied in these traditions, Professor Davidson shows that there can be a historical basis for the narratives and offers guidelines for exploring it. The Genesis stories cannot simply be seen as a reading back into earlier times of the background to the social customs and religious outlook of their later editors. Introductory sections deal with the sources, historicity and general character¬istics of the narratives, and are followed by a section-by-section presentation of the text with commentary in the established style of the series.

Robert Davidson finds the Old Testament books of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon to be both fascinating and challenging, exploring life's ultimate meaning and the concept of love as expressions of God's design for humankind.Fascinating, surprising, challenging—these are among the words used by Robert Davidson to describe the two books covered in this commentary. He writes that these two books, linked in tradition to Solomon, share “a refreshing honesty and a healthy exploration of the most powerful of human emotions, presented to us in the conviction that all of life, its unanswered questions and its passions, its joys and its frustrations, come to us from God.” The book of Ecclesiastes concerns the ultimate meaning of life itself and reminds us that we can be happy even amid uncertainty. The Song of Solomon invites us to an exploration of love that reminds us of God's unending care for the world. The Daily Study Bible series seamlessly continues the legacy of William Barclay’s renowned New Testament series by delving into the texts of the Old Testament, weaving together ancient wisdom and modern insights for a transformative reading experience. In this novel of conspiracy and terrorism a dark presence from Robert Davidson's previous novel The Tuzla Run dominates centre stage. Liam MacDermot is fostered by the violent embrace of revolt and matures to become an iconic lynch pin in the IRA's fight against the British State for an independent North. With killing skills, forged in the cauldron of an underground war, tempered and honed in action he becomes too ruthless even for his comrades in arms. He deviates only to pursue his vendetta against ex IRA hitman Declan Rath and Spider Webb a former SAS soldier. His psychotic obsession with wholesale but clinical savagery may prove to be his undoing, but he is the nemesis for many, bringing death to innocents in his belief only blood spilled can nurture victory. MI5 joins forces with Webb and Rath as tensions spiral in this conflict of psychopathic savagery versus law and order. Elusive, with no visible footprint, despite his known involvement in several atrocities, The Man From Armagh will be their most deadly enemy and threatens to be unstoppable.

Robert Davidson is an octogenarian and although born in Aberdeen, he has lived in Banchory, on Royal Deeside for the past 45 years. He started writing his ' Comments on Political, Economic & Social Events' as a hobby in the 1980's, endeavouring to capture a variety of interesting events which he thought would be of general interest to many, in particular those living in the Banchory area. He approached the editor of the local weekly 'Deeside Piper Newspaper' and asked if he would consider publishing them. Following their acceptance, the earlier ones were entitled 'This and That' in 1993. It was then decided some time later to re-title the column 'Deesider'. He continued to submit these until 1998.

There are few stories like the story of Jonah. It is not only a story of a man. It is the story of man. But even more, it is also a story the man - Jesus Christ. Long before Jesus was born, Jonah wrote his story as a prophecy of his coming, his death, his resurrection and his commission to the Church. More than a story of a whale. It is a whale of a story. This book is a devotion on the Book of Jonah, a commentary on the book, and a study of the critical question of what the whale was.
