'For God's sake look after our people' Captain Scott's harrowing account of his expedition to the South Pole in 1910-12 was first published in 1913. In his journals Scott records his party's optimistic departure from New Zealand, the hazardous voyage of theTerra Nova to Antarctica, and the trek with ponies and dogs across the ice to the Pole. On the way the explorers conduct scientific experiments, collect specimens, and get to know each other's characters. Their discovery that Amundsen has beaten them to their goal, and the endurance with which they face an 850-mile march to safety, have become the stuff of legend. This new edition publishes for the first time a complete list of the changes made to Scott's original text before publication. In his Introduction Max Jones illuminates the Journals' writing and publication, Scott's changing reputation, and the continued attraction of heroes in our cynical age. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Why did Luke include ten occasions of Jesus sharing meals with people, seven of those scenes found only in Luke? How many hundreds or thousands of times did Jesus eat with other people? These ten occasions must have been preserved in the Christian community and related to Luke because Jesus had used them to meet deep, widespread needs or to convey important truths. Luke clearly recognized that Jesus had some purpose, some meaning to convey in these mealtime conversations. While all four gospels show this theme, Luke gives the most specific examples. In the ten meals addressed by Scott, we see the importance Jesus placed on meeting people socially and interacting with them in their personal settings. Found in these occasions are strong bonds of affection and sharp confrontations. It is in the intimacy of sharing a meal that emotions are brought to the surface: indignation, thanksgiving, forgiveness, sorrow, overflowing joy. Scott shows Jesus exposing these emotions and meeting them with searching insight, sometimes confirmation, sometimes deserved reproof, and always his offer of healing grace. Included with each sermon is a litany that is coordinated with the teaching of the meal. Also included at the beginning of each chapter is a suggested "Worship Focus" -- one or two easy-to-find objects that serve to illustrate Jesus' purpose at each meal. Originally written for midweek Communion services during Lent, they also are quite suitable for Communion services throughout the year. Robert F. Scott, an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA), has had a varied career as a pastor suburban, inner city, and rural congregations. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton Theological Seminary. Along with being a pastor, he has taught history, writing, and chemical engineering. He currently lives in Wilmington, Delaware, with his wife Bettie and their two sons.

Written on his return to England, Scott's "The Voyage of the Discovery" provides a detailed and fascinating account of Antarctic exploration in the early twentieth century. Starting with a history of early discoveries in the region, he goes on to record the difficulties of organizing such an expedition and the challenges and dangers involved in the exploration of such a wild and untamed continent. Scott's account reflects the sense of wonder and amazement that he felt on discovering the strange and exotic fauna of the region, the problems caused by the unpredictable and often harsh weather, the comradeship of the men forced to co-exist in cramped quarters and the hardships and privations faced by a crew who had no help nearby in times of distress and only the provisions they could carry to see them through the trip. Beautifully illustrated with photographs of the expedition and pictures drawn by Dr. Wilson of the area, "Voyage" is a fascinating account of a land that was eventually to claim the author's life.
