It also explores the migration of millions of black and white southerners beyond the South to such destinations as Los Angeles, and their impact on the industry. Originally published in 1989, Robert Jackson’s outstanding book revealed a whole area of wartime experience which had been neglected. It was the first book of its kind to cover all aspects of the years behind the wire in Prisoner of War (POW) camps during the First World War. The author drew extensively on unpublished personal narratives from the archives of the Imperial War Museum to provide a broad cross-section of life in the POW camps. He also dealt with the work of the Red Cross, internment in neutral countries, treatment of prisoners immediately after capture and escapes.
