The history of religious dissent has usually been written from the point of view of the martyr for his faith. Elliot Rose's aim in this book is to look at the religious troubles of the Elizabethan age from the point of view of those who sympathized with ardent Catholics or Puritans but were not anxious to be martyrs. Two questions arise: What options other than martyrdom were open to them in practice? And what did their religion tell them about the morality of evasion or half-compliance? Answers to these would help to answer the larger question of how groups survive under conditions of permanent and official repression. Mr Rose does not attempt to measure persecution by statistics. He has examined the casuistic writings of the period for their teachings on resistance and evasion of law, and shows how little 'casuistry' deserves its reputation.

Have you ever wondered whether there's anything in astrology? Or why people so often have rebellions in their teens, big changes at the end of their twenties or mid-life crises in their forties? Rose Elliot describes how the motions of the planets coincide with major life events from birth to over 100 with many real life examples and shows: · The 'cycle of luck' which worked for J.K. Rowling, Bob Geldof and Anita Roddick and how to tap into it. · How critical points in their cycles brought Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston together - and apart. · The cycle which made Princess Diana unable to 'live a lie' any more - and made Victoria and David Beckham change direction. · Why the Iraq War need never have happened - and why Tony Blair's and George W. Bush's cycles meant they were in no fit state to take decisions. Discover which planets are affecting you now and how you can harness and make the most of their energies. Empowering as well as insightful, LIFE CYCLES makes this ancient science accessible to all. The previous edition was published by Pan Macmillan.
