Dispersion in Estuaries and Coastal Waters describes the physical processes which result in the dilution of a substance in the marine environment. The emphasis is mainly on the fundamental mechanisms of dispersion and the occurrence of these processes in estuaries and coastal waters Aspects of the present understanding of fluid dynamics in homogenous and stratified flows are discussed, with particular reference to the relevance of flow conditions to the turbulent state. The book describes how the associated dispersion processes are represented in mathematical models to quantify dilution in marine systems and the experimental techniques used to derive the mixing parameters required for the models. Concluding by discussing the application of the concepts of dispersion in well mixed, stratified and partially mixed systems, Dispersion in Estuaries and Coastal Waters acts as an excellent guide book for those needing to solve practical problems relating to marine dispersion. It also provides a useful review of dispersion as it cites key publications, both recent and long-standing, which are invaluable in interpreting and quantifying the dilution and fate of material in the marine environment.

This book reproduces more than 200 fascinating pictures that illustrate the history of Uttoxeter and the surrounding villages of Denstone, Leigh, Marchington and Rochester. Many of the images come from the area's most important early photographers most of which have never been reproduced in print before. Uttoxeter's history is examined by looking at the interesting changes that can be seen in local establishments such as schools and churches, and also by looking at the area's social life. This social life is illustrated by pictures of events such as annual carnivals and special occasions such as the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. Perhaps the two most notable features of modern Uttoxeter are the JCB firm that originated from J.C. Bamford's first factory in the 1950s and the racecourse that has developed through the twentieth century to become one of the nation's finest. The history of JCB and the racecourse is extremely well illustrated in this book and can be found with pictures of other local businesses. The images will bring back memories for some people while introducing local history to a new group of people who have not had the fortune to experience it yet. Roy Lewis has compiled this book with help from local collections including the County Museum in Shugborough, the Uttoxeter Heritage Centre, the Staffordshire County Council Quality Learning Services Educational Support Unit and private collectors.

Stafford was already an important place when King Alfred’s daughter fortified the town against the Danes; she made it both a royal borough and a market town. William the Conqueror destroyed much of the town to build a castle after the defeat of Edric the Wild. The town then flourished with a magnificent new church and a royal charter. By Tudor times the population suffered a sharp decline, but then a few wealthy families revived its trade. In the 18th century shoe manufacturing became the dominant industry and the railways attracted heavy engineering.

The woman whose body was found down a South Wales coal mine was a stranger to those parts. She had come from the north-east in search of a missing husband, and with the help of an enquiry agent had found him. It does not take the local police long to put two and two together, especially when the husband confesses to the crime. But at the trial an able defence counsel tears the police evidence to ribbons and the case is thrown wide open once again, much to the relief of Inspector Crow, who had always distrusted that confession. What puzzles him was why it had ever been made.To find out, Crow travels to Canada, where the origin of the mystery lay. What he learns there, and how it affects the lives of several members of a close-knit Welsh community, forms the substance of Roy Lewis's suspenseful book.
