When Nick moves to Texas with his family, he already has enough trouble on his hands. Being an outcast in Jefferson Middle School and constantly being picked on by Brutus, the school bully, Nick is ready to collapse in frustration. But after a tornado whisks him into the Chihuahuan desert, he discovers a mysterious green lake owned by a man with a scarred face, and drinks from it.
