International Migration and Human Rights

International Migration and Human Rights

Samuel Martinez

University of California Press
2009
pokkari
In this work, a multidisciplinary group of scholars examines how the actions of the United States as a global leader are worsening pressures on people worldwide to migrate, while simultaneously degrading migrant rights. Uniting such diverse issues as market reform, drug policy, and terrorism under a common framework of human rights, this book constitutes a call for a new vision on immigration.

sidottu
Based on periodic ethnographic fieldwork over a span of fifteen years, Martinez shows how impoverished plantation dwellers find ways of coping with the alienation that would be expected while laboring to produce goods for the richer countries. Despite living in dire poverty, these workers live in a thoroughly commodified social environment. Ritual, eroticism, electronic media, household adornment, payday-weekend "binging" are ways even chronically poor plantation residents dream beyond reality. Yet plantation residents' efforts to live decently and escape from the dead hand of necessity also deepen existing divisions of ethnic identity and status. As the divide between "haves" and "have-nots" worsens as a result of neoliberal reform and the decline of sugar in international markets, this book reveals on an intensely human scale the coarsening of the social fabric of this and other communities of the world's poorer nations.

Amazing Marriage: A 31 Step Devotional To A Heavenly Marriage Using The KISS Method
In Ephesian's husbands are told to love their wives "as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her." That is THE Gospel and the power that we must bring into our marriages. It is the cornerstone of your marriage; the knowledge of His love, His finished work and that in Him we have been forgiven and made the righteousness of God in Christ.Marriage can sometimes be very challenging but only because we do not seek help from the Author of Marriage, our Heavenly Father and bring Jesus into our marriages. As a result, discouragement, selfishness, and self-centeredness can enter in. Marriage was not intended by God to be hard. In Amazing Marriage, each chapter is intentionally short. In our fast-paced world, many don't have time to sit down and read a lengthy book on marriage. Hopefully, couples will take the time to read and meditate on the truths in this book and read the recommended Bible verses. Pastor Martinez has shared his wisdom in thirty-one short chapters to make it easy and fast to digest. Keep your marriage brimming. Bring the gospel of grace and God's favor, Jesus, into your marriage as you read, Amazing Marriage.
