Creating Jewellery in Wood

Creating Jewellery in Wood

Fil Rouge Press

nidottu
Taking jewellery design beyond metal, Creating Jewellery in Wood teaches jewellers woodworking skills through a series of projects and step-by-step technique guides, enabling them to discover how knowledge of this craft can open up new perspectives for their art. The author’s beautiful projects are complemented by inspirational gallery spreads featuring the work of key designers working in wood. Jewellers have always used a range of materials and wood has been used for centuries; today there are fresh, modern ways to create stand-out pieces. Wood is becoming more popular as an alternative to pricier metal—it is warm, lightweight, and has huge potential for shaping and finishing. Creating Jewellery in Wood enables jewellers to expand their range of techniques, and combine wood with other media, from silver to silicon. Readers will learn skills that include joining, turning, steaming, polishing, staining, painting, bevelling, inlaying and working with different woods. This book will also appeal to woodworkers who want to extend their practice to jewellery, and those who want to learn woodworking skills, but who find furniture too intimidating and want an alternative to bowls and boxes.

After the Supreme Court of Canada’s 1999 Marshall decision recognized Mi’kmaw fishers’ treaty right to fish, the fishers entered the inshore lobster fishery across Atlantic Canada. At Burnt Church/Esgenoôpetitj, New Brunswick, the Mi’kmaw fishery provoked violent confrontations with neighbours and the Canadian government. Over the next two years, boats, cottages, and a sacred grove were burned, people were shot at and beaten, boats rammed and sunk, roads barricaded, and the local wharf occupied. Based on 12 months of ethnographic field work in Burnt Church/Esgenoôpetitj, Fishing in Contested Waters explores the origins of this dispute and the beliefs and experiences that motivated the locals involved in it. Weaving the perspectives of Native and non-Native people together, Sarah J. King examines the community as a contested place, simultaneously Mi’kmaw and Canadian. Drawing on philosophy and indigenous, environmental, and religious studies, Fishing in Contested Waters demonstrates the deep roots of contemporary conflicts over rights, sovereignty, conservation, and identity.

A Reluctant Memsahib shares the story of Isabel Richards, who travelled out to India in 1904 when her husband was appointed to the Viceroy’s Council. A lively correspondent with an eye for detail, and an ear for social nuance, Isabel wrote over 500 letters to her mother documenting her insights. This unique correspondence provides a ringside view of the key players and events over five years, which were amongst the most significant in the history of the British Raj with an impact still felt in India today. Isabel’s letters and diaries provide a totally fresh impression of the extraordinary way the Indian Empire conducted itself, Not having worked their way up the ladder of the Indian Civil Service, the young couple were totally unprepared for life at the very top echelons of the British Raj. Seen through the fresh eyes of a liberally educated, middle-class London woman, she offers a first-hand account of Curzon’s battles with the India Office and Kitchener, and the hugely negative impact he had on Indians, which strengthened demands for Independence and helped set India on the road to partition. She takes nothing for granted and describes frankly what she saw, most especially the extraordinary social demands her husband’s role imposed on her and her struggle to balance this with her expectations as a mother.
