Sudan, 1985. Mara Voski_, a young Yugoslavian journalist, arrives in Khartoum to cover the preparations for the upcoming elections. She also anticipates seeing again some friends she had met there a couple of years earlier, and especially Nyamila Deng, a young Dinka woman with whom she had shared an adventurous journey through South Sudan in 1983, at the beginning of a devastating civil war. When Mara reaches her friends' address, however, she finds their house deserted. In search of her friends, she comes across a fellow journalist, Andrew Dawson, who eventually helps her locate Nyamila. But if the relationship with Andrew deepens into more than a simple friendship, meeting Nyamila again will prove emotionally traumatic, for Mara: the beautiful, enigmatic Nyamila isn't any longer - and maybe has never been - the person Mara thought she knew. And Andrew... Who is Andrew, in reality? In the microcosm of the Khartoum of the '80s, nothing and nobody seem to be what they appear.

Khartum, Sudan, 1985. Mara, una giovane giornalista jugoslava, arriva nella capitale sudanese per realizzare un servizio sulle imminenti elezioni. Prevede anche di rivedere una coppia di amici incontrati li' alcuni anni prima, e soprattutto la donna della coppia, Nyamila, con cui ha condiviso un avventuroso viaggio nel Sud Sudan all'inizio di una devastante guerra civile. Ma una volta arrivata all'indirizzo di Mark e Nyamila, Mara trova la loro casa deserta e in stato di abbandono.L'incontro fortuito con Andrew, un giornalista britannico che lavora a Khartum, le permettera infine di localizzare Nyamila. Tuttavia, se la relazione tra Mara e Andrew si approfondisce, andando ben presto al di la di una semplice amicizia, rivedere Nyamila si rivelera traumatico, per Mara. La bellissima, enigmatica Nyamila non e piu' - e forse non e mai stata - la persona che Mara credeva di conoscere. E Andrew... Chi e Andrew in realta? Nel microcosmo della Khartum degli anni '80, niente e nessuno sembra essere cio' che appare.

E una splendida tarda mattinata primaverile a New York. Adriana esce di casa per imbucare una lettera-verita indirizzata a un vecchio amore, spinta dall'incontenibile desiderio di rivalsa per l'umiliazione subita alcuni anni prima, quando lui ha rifiutato di rincontrarla. Ma gia nel sofferto proposito di scrivere quella lettera, si e messa in moto una strana interazione tra due realta e due desideri - quelli di lei e quelli di lui - che sono forse piu prossimi di quanto ciascuno dei protagonisti possa immaginare. Sorta di divertissement dai toni volutamente melodrammatici, questo racconto ha come temi di fondo l'incertezza sulla reale natura di chi ci e piu vicino, cosi come la sempre possibile variabilita del destino che ci siamo scelti - o in cui ci siamo trovati.

A few, rapid dives into the intricacies and absurdities of life: from the difficult renewal of an interrupted friendship to the flaring-up of senseless violence; from the enchantment of dreams to the torments of old age; from a whiff of the secret pleasures of a Sicilian summer evening to the ambiguity of a young woman's feelings and situation... At times ironic, at others dangerously sad or stirringly positive, these short stories won't fail to bemuse and intrigue you.
