Like The Monkey's Journal, this collection is primary fantasy, but the stories are perhaps a bit more eclectic. The Kaleidoscope Jaguars of the Jungles of Mexicatl and The Wretched Sunlight of Shasta follow a self-described low-level sorceress to different worlds. I've included a bonus snippet of travel preparations prior to The Kaleidoscope Jaguars.Crate Training is a a piece of werewolf flash fiction that I entered into a contest. It didn't win the reader's choice that week, but the website editors did choose to include it in their yearly collection. It's cute and, well, biting. The Body Mage's Foot, an alternate world fantasy, is just plain weird. Borders on light body horror. If you're squeamish, skip this one. Or you'll never look at meatballs the same way again.Blood Tracks explores one young woman's experience with genome-changing nanobytes. I really like Bettina-I hope I'll be "seeing" and writing more of her story. The Girl Who Created a Mechanico Menagerie is based on one of my favorite fairy tales, The Boy Who Drew Cats, and is an alternate world fantasy as well.
Stories include Knitting Hope, Knitting Out The Sorrow, and The Story of a Skein. Knitting patterns include Janie's Diamonds Hat, Janie's Chevron Hat, and the Micaceous Cowl. When you think about it, just the act of manipulating two needles and some string and making a hat, or a scarf, or mittens, is magic in itself.Us knitters know that.Three short stories and three knitting patterns round out this collection. The patterns (two hats and a cowl) are suitable for beginning knitters comfortable knitting in the round. If you like these patterns, please check out my knitting website, sunsetcat.com.
Over the past year, I've published a collection of short stories (or, as in the case of KnitWitch, a combination of stories and knitting patterns) each month. The genres have ranged from romance (A Snowman Made of Sand) to fantasy (the two weird west Dinah collections, the two urban fantasy Jolene collections, The Kaleidoscope Jaguars of the Jungles of Mexicatl, The Monkey's Journal), from science fiction (Gates of Wonder, The Mermaid of Ellis Prime) to mystery/crime (One Plus One Equals More). That's a lot of different types of stories I've collected some of my favorite stories across the board and included them in this sampler collection.Stories included: A Snowman Made of SandThe Medic of the Crow City Mining Co-opThe Fox SorcererGratitude of the OceanThe Final Test of Maria Ramirez
