On a cold and wet September day in 1970, a fifteen-year-old boy from the South Wales valleys said goodbye to his parents at Newport railway station. He was embarking on a journey that would last two years. He was joining the British Army as a Boy Soldier at Bramcote, Nuneaton, the home of The Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Artillery. Starting his journey as a raw recruit; working his way through the system to leave as a Mustered Gunner and also winning the right to proudly wear the famous Green Beret of the Commandos. He tells about the unwritten rules that were passed down from boy soldier to boy soldier over the years. Rules you had to accept and follow to complete your time at Bramcote.
Information Systems Strategic Management
This fully revised and updated second edition of Information Systems Strategic Management continues to provide an accessible yet critical analysis of the strategic aspects of information systems. The second edition again covers the relevant practical and theoretical material of information systems, supported by extensive case studies, student activities, and problem scenarios. The ISS issues will be fully integrated into current thinking about corporate strategy, addressing the fact that a range of emerging strategic issues are often ill addressed in IS strategy books, which also fail to differentiate between IT, the application of technology, and IS, the participative, human-centred approaches to information and knowledge management.Specific changes include Expansion and internationalisation of case studies Broader focus beyond social and critical theory New chapters on strategy and e-business, strategic management as a technical or social process, strategic implications of information security, applications portfolio, and technology management. The focus on strategic issues and the integration of IT and IS issues ensures this text is ideal for MBA students studying MIS, as well as being suitable for MSC students in IS/IT.

Metaphysics and the Disunity of Scientific Knowledge
First published in 1998, this volume’s primary concern is to demonstrate how a metaphysics can be developed which enables us to make do in an uncertain world and to develop a pragmatic alternative to postmodernism. Opposing unificationist view of science, Clarke suggests, needs to be understood in the context of the perceived threat of metaphysical disorder. He explores this through issues including epistemology, fundamentalism, pluralism and idealisation and identifies a potential solution similar to the work of Otto Neurath.

Community Organization and Development

Community Organization and Development

This book traces the development of community development/organization as it evolved separately in Britain and the United States, and how the social and political situations in each country determined the various shapes and directions it took. In presenting a comprehensive history of the subject, Community Organization and Development draws on local and international factors that have helped to shape its application and fortunes across varied settings. Recent economic and social pressures, the changing demographics of developed economies, and the rise of social and cultural diversity all contribute to the need for a comprehensive model that can be deployed to effect the necessary social changes required for sustained change with stability. The history of this intervention technique throws up many examples from which insight can be gained for the present time, and Wales is used as an example of how national policy and local development could be combined for maximum effect. Community development should become reliable and quantifiable, and the comprehensive model developed here demonstrates how and when it should be deployed.

In his first book Famous Frets Steve Clarke took a forensic deep dive into many famous guitars with detailed specifications of their construction with supporting photographs. This book Famous Frets Fotos is volume one in a series of two, where Clarke focuses on the images of the guitars rather than the very detailed approach as used in the first book. As part of Clarke’s role as a guitar consultant, he is often invited to view a single guitar or, as was the case with Peter Green and KK Downing, entire collections to assess, and in some instances repair guitars in a very short time. So deep dives are not always possible. With the Peter Green collection Steve looked at one hundred and fifty guitars and also banjos, 4-string Turkish lutes, amps and mandolins! That collection was so large it was located across two sites in London and Oxford. Steve did however manage to take more intricate details on a few of the most known guitars, some from his Splinter group period. Having been so lucky to have had such opportunities. For Steve there were a number of ‘pinch me’ moments, for example looking at the Graffiti Yellow Strat owned by Jeff Beck. Now guitar lovers can also get to view many of the guitars that Steve has been fortunate enough to be able to photograph in the course of his work.
