Let's get the story of Abraham Gilbert Saffron down. Just the facts, Your Honour. Wherever you find entertainers performing in neon-lit pubs and clubs, chances are you will find a wannabe gangster or two hanging around. Selling sex and drugs has always been a way to make a fast buck - and potential customers are more open to temptation in pubs, bars, dance halls and nightclubs. Abe Saffron figured all this out very quickly. He was a chancer who kickstarted his criminal career SP bookmaking and receiving stolen goods. While he earned himself a quid or two, he wanted much more, and he was ruthless enough to seize any moment to get it ... no matter what he had to do. Running pubs opened up opportunities for young Abe. Conflicts over land use exist all over the world. In semi-arid parts of Africa, for example, pastoralists have by no means the same interests as settled farmers, lodge/safari company operators and tourists. Moreover, these conflicts of interest are likely to intensify if rural poverty and dependency on land increases. Building on ten years working with pastoral communities, IT carried out action research in Kenya with two communities for whom wildlife management issues are a matter of daily life. The research found very little trade off for these communities in terms of enhanced opportunities derived from local wildlife management systems. Many complex cultural and social issues are raised by a shift to cultivation and other new livelihood strategies for traditionally pastoralist communities, none of which currently promote beneficial interactions with wildlife conservation.This Working Paper presents detailed analysis of the two case studies and then addresses the question of whether the problematic situations which emerge can be addressed by improved management of interactions between the stakeholders, or whether in fact the dilemmas faced are part of a deeper structural conflict of interests which the more optimistic win-win literature on communities and wildlife management in Africa has obscured.

The International Seed Treaty came into force in 2004 was the culmination of over 20 years of negotiation. The need for a treaty arose out of a growing awareness that crucial plant genetic resources are being irretrievably lost. This book describes the complex process by which a wide range of parties worked to shape the negotiations and conclude the resulting Treaty. With a focus on how the diverse array of actors were able to work together in new ways despite their radically differing interests, this study provides vital lessons for governments, international agencies and NGOs on successful international treaty negotiation. Describes the work of Practical Action in introducing consensus-based planning approaches in villages that are poor even by Bangladesh standards, where 90 per cent of people live under the poverty line and over 60 per cent are illiterate. These methods work on raising the voice and confidence of the poor at the local level within their communities, and the results have been spectacular: opening up new income generation and resource management and influencing opportunities for marginalized communities in flood-prone areas.
