चेतावनी अगर आप कमजोर हृदय और इतिहास में छिपे सिर्फ सकारात्मक पहलुओं में विश्वाश रखते है तो यह अवश्य ही आपके लिए नहीं है "ठगमानुष" शृंखला का प्रथम खण्ड "जगीरा एक अजनबी सौदागर", सन् 1850 के बाद ठगों के पुनरोदय और उनकी क्रूर यात्रा पर आधारित एक काल्पनिक उपन्यास है। कैसे ठगों का सरदार "जगीरा" और उसके साथी एक ठग यात्रा पर निकलते हैं, बेहद विपरीत परिस्थितियों में भी वे अपनी यात्रा जारी रखते हैं और लूटते हैं जीवन सिर्फ सामाजिक बुराइयों से नहीं बल्कि मानविक बुराइयों से भी होकर गुजरता है। अगर कोई इंसान मानविक बुराइयों को अपनाकर, श्रद्धा और विश्वास के साथ स्वीकार करे कि दैवीय आशीर्वाद से यह उसका जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार है; तब वह सिर्फ अपराधी नही रह जाता, तब उसे ठगमानुष कहा जाता है। लगभग सन् 1800 के समय यही ठगमानुष खुलेआम शिकार करते थे, वे अपना हर शिकार देवी माँ भवानी को समर्पित करते थे। वे इतने क्रूर और पेशेवर होते थे कि लोग उनके नाम से थर्राते थे। ऐसा क्या था कि अंग्रेज भी उनसे खौफ खाते थे? इसलिए एक अलग विभाग बनाया जिसे बाद में इंटेलिजेंस ब्यूरो के नाम से जाना गया।शायद आप ऐसे अपराधी से बच सकते जो आपके सुरक्षा कवच को भेदना जानता हो परंतु अगर यह उसका पेशा है और वह इसे किसी भी कीमत पर करना जानता है तो आप कभी नहीं बच सकते।
