The authors compare the ideologies of the free-market with religious faith, giving the World Bank the role of a secular church setting out to convert the world's underdeveloped economies to the consumer capitalist way, and so to create an enormous secular empire. This book is published in September 1994 to coincide with the World Bank's 50th annive

Pinpoints the dangers to the ordinary people of the West of allowing the debt crisis to continue. It proposes debt relief as a means not only of addressing questions of justice and equity, but also an essential means of addressing problems in the West. Environmental resources which we all share, most notably the rain forests, are being cashed in by debtor nations - the pressure to earn foreign exchange promotes illegal drug exports as the best means of survival, immigration from impoverished countries, often illegal, stirs up race hatred and markets for export goods diminish as poor countries fall into a downward spiral of decreasing National income and political instability due to rising unemployment.

Is the EU Constitution dead in the water? Although it may have disappeared from the headlines, right-wing European leaders have not given up on pushing through a binding EU text providing total freedom for goods, services and capital but few advantages for Europeans. A more neo-liberal and anti-democratic document than the one rejected by the French and the Dutch may be hard to imagine, but the new reform treaty tries hard. What do they have in store for us? What should European people be fighting for? Leading writer and alter-globalisation activist Susan George explains what is at stake for all peoples of Europe. What must we reject and how will such a document affect our lives? Who will it really empower - corporations or ordinary Europeans? What kind of future do we want to build together as Europeans? Written with clarity and authority, We the Peoples of Europe will help you make up your own mind.

George Bush leaves the White House in January 2009 and the United States goes back to “normal”, right? Wrong, argues Susan George in this fascinating, thorough and often chilling account of the decades-long transformation of American society and political culture. Using the four “Ms” – money, media, marketing, management—but above all with a keen sense of mission, the American secular and religious right has made its “long march through the institutions” and changed the way Americans think. As the left went about its business in blissful ignorance, convinced that its policies, programmes and projects spoke for themselves and would always prevail; the right’s well-oiled machine of foundations, lobbies, think-tanks, publications, political cadres, lawyers and activist organisations slowly and strategically took over. A broad alliance of neo-liberals, neo-conservatives and the religious right successfully manufactured a new common sense, assaulted Enlightenment values and targeted the top of society where culture is created and legitimized, because they knew that ideas have consequences—and not just in the United States. Hijacking America is that rarity of a book, a thoroughly researched page-turner. Clearly and gracefully written, it will enthral the general reader while providing plenty of factual nourishment for the student of politics, culture, religion or international relations. And for all those who hope for a different America in the future, the first step is to hold the present one up to the light and understand how it got that way.

Crisis? Whose crisis? Today we are in the midst of a multifaceted crisis which touches the lives of everyone on the planet. Whether it's growing poverty and inequality or shrinking access to food and water, the collapse of global financial markets or the dire effects of climate change, every aspect of this crisis can be traced to a transnational neoliberal elite that has steadily eroded our rights and stripped us of power. And yet our world has never been so wealthy, and we have, right now, all the knowledge, tools and skills we need to build a greener, fairer, richer world. Such a breakthrough is not some far-fetched utopia, but an immediate, concrete possibility. Our future is in our hands.

Lobbying has long been part of the political landscape. But in recent years links between big business and government have become stronger and more far-reaching than ever. Global corporations now demand control over decisions affecting labour laws, finance, public health, food and agriculture, safety regulations, taxes and international trade and investment. They even claim the right to private tribunals where they can sue governments for passing laws that could harm their present or future profits. These business elites don?t want to govern directly. They operate behind the scenes - directing planning, setting standards and fashioning government to maximise their own profits. Thanks to the UN Global Compact they have extended their influence to the highest levels of multilateral decision-making and now, via the Davos-inspired Global Redesign Initiative, they are setting their sights on managing world-wide public policy. Elected by and accountable to no one, secretive and highly organized, these shadow sovereigns are destroying the very notion of the common good and making a mockery of democracy. It is high time we challenged this assault on our rights and our institutions. In this incisive and clear-sighted book Susan George provides us with the practical knowledge to do just that.

Manipulated Lives: intertwined lives of five people suffered under manipulations
I grew up in Kerala as the eldest daughter of a middle class family struggling to meet the both ends, with three sisters in a row and a brother at the end. My marriage was arranged to a man without my consent; he married me because of the pressure from his mother. Then I found that my college mate, whom I had a crush on, was also a victim of manipulations by his close family members. Manipulation to him was more visible, but he was too polite to resist due to love, respect, and concerns he carried in his mind for them. By hearing his story and experiencing the result of coaxing in my own life, I thought of telling these to somebody, but had no intention to publish. But my college mate made me promise to him to write his side of the story after his death which I did in this book. Then I added my story too with it.I believe the time parents selecting the spouses for their children are gone. It worked for ages, but the high aspirations, freedom, independence and globalization changed the culture and demography, challenging the old order. It is high time that parents ask the children's wish in finding their spouses. Incompatibility between couples is a major reason for divorce .I hope my memoir will be a lesson to many including parents and the young ones who are getting ready to wed.

Participants in the worldwide citizens' movement for social change and global justice like to proclaim that 'Another World Is Possible.' But is it? To this popular slogan, Susan George adds a cautionary 'If' and suggests how we can indeed reach that other world.Whether you are a seasoned campaigner and confirmed 'world-changer,' someone who wonders how you can join in the growing citizens' movement, or someone who simply wants to know what this movement is about, this book is for you. You will discover that we are not condemned to glaring North-South inequalities, obscene wealth gaps, environmental destruction or inordinate power remaining in the hands of a small minority, if...

Susan George sätter in besluten i sitt klassmässiga sammanhang. Stellan Hermansson i Vänsterpress En trovärdig uppvisning i rödgrön radikalism.
