Montana Pioneers: Creating a Community is a compilation of 31 articles about the people who came to Montana in the late 1800's, took up many types of occupations, and had unbelievable adventures. These people made the state their home. Most of those whose lives are shared in this book settled in a north central region that became the city of Great Falls where their combined efforts created a community for themselves and those who would eventually join them.

In this novel, Ben Reynolds thinks his future plans are firmly in place. He has one college semester left before he and his girlfriend move from Montana to a big city to land high-paying jobs. Instead, Ben finds himself in charge of his family's debt-ridden wheat farm that he is not prepared to manage. To make matters worse, his girlfriend refuses to accept the change of plans. While trying to overcome his problems, he knows that it's time to start making decisions about the farm. Crops don't wait; it's growing season.

Stepping out on her own at mid-life, Connie remakes herself with a new career. Along with her faithful dog, Sam, she moves to her first solo assignment as a pastor. This account takes Connie through that first year at Old West where she beats down the antagonism of being a woman in what is considered by some to be a man's job while attempting to revitalize a traditional church. Connie seeks guidance from multiple resources as she attempts to help those in her congrgation with age-old problems, such as loneliness, grief, inability to forgive, poor health, dealing with difficult people, and abuse. Sam goes to work with Connie each day and is sometimes immense help but then there are days that he gets into mischief and acts like what is expected from a dog.
