In this important new study, Thompson examines the literary and linguistic characteristics of the Book of Revelation and analyses their relationship to the situation of the Asian Christians to whom the Book is addressed. Using both literary and archaeological sources, he reconstructs the social and political conditions of life in the province of Asia under the emperor Domitian at the end of the first century AD and attempts to determine the place of Christians and Jews in that social setting. In this way he is able to situate the text in its true context and shed new light upon its intended meaning.

First published in 1990, Songs of the Doomed is back in print -- by popular demand! In this third and most extraordinary volume of the Gonzo Papers, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson recalls high and hideous moments in his thirty years in the Passing Lane -- and no one is safe from his hilarious, remarkably astute social commentary. With Thompson's trademark insight and passion about the state of American politics and culture, Songs of the Doomed charts the long, strange trip from Kennedy to Quayle in Thompson's freewheeling, inimitable style. Spanning four decades -- 1950 to 1990 -- Thompson is at the top of his form while fleeing New York for Puerto Rico, riding with the Hell's Angels, investigating Las Vegas sleaze, grappling with the Dukakis problem, and finally, detailing his infamous lifestyle bust, trial documents, and Fourth Amendment battle with the Law. These tales -- often sleazy, brutal, and crude -- are only the tip of what Jack Nicholson called the most baffling human iceberg of our time. Songs of the Doomed is vintage Thompson -- a brilliant, brazen, bawdy compilation of the greatest sound bites of Gonzo journalism from the past thirty years.

Pointing the way to a new history of the transformation of British subjects into American citizens, State and Citizen challenges the presumption that the early American state was weak by exploring the changing legal and political meaning of citizenship. The volume's distinguished contributors cast new light on the shift from subjecthood to citizenship during the American Revolution by showing that the federal state played a much greater part than is commonly supposed.Going beyond master narratives--celebratory or revisionist--that center on founding principles, the contributors argue that geopolitical realities and the federal state were at the center of early American political development. The volume's editors, Peter Thompson and Peter S. Onuf, bring together political science and historical methodologies to demonstrate that citizenship was a political as well as a legal concept. The American state, this collection argues, was formed and evolved in a more dialectical relationship between citizens and government authority than is generally acknowledged. Suggesting points of comparison between an American narrative of state development--previously thought to be exceptional--and those of Europe and Latin America, the contributors break fresh ground by investigating citizenship in its historical context rather than by reference only to its capacity to confer privileges.
DOJOYABURI - The Challenges of Kodokan Judo (English)
Have you ever thought about the day-to-day life of Jigoro Kano? What was daily life like in the first years since the founding of the Kodokan? We are sure that you as a lover of Judo and martial arts at some point have had the curiosity to know intimately the events of those years that forged the legend that of the newly created Jujutsu school of Jigoro Kano and later renamed as Judo and the extraordinary expansion on all continents. Jigoro Kano Shihan was an extraordinary man, a visionary, an exceptional educator who knew how to reform Jujutsu to adapt it to the new times, preventing it from becoming extinct as happened with other Japanese arts. In this novel, the authors have the romantic intention of transporting the reader to those difficult times, full of uncertainty and social instability. We encourage you to put yourself in the shoes of Jigoro Kano and his disciples; we share with you his joys and achievements and also his fears and failures. Dojoyaburi referred to a type of challenge that ancient martial arts schools use to set up their difference and often had fatal consequences. Surviving those days, standing out as a new Jujutsu school and creating a network of instructors and students who spread the art all over the world was an extremely difficult and complex task that only a great human being like Jigoro Kano could make possible with the incomparable help of his trusted disciples. The events take place from 1881, before creating the Kodokan, until 1884 where the first challenge between the Totsuka Yoshin ryu School and the Kodokan takes place. To give it the form of a novel we have carried out an exhaustive work with documentation and research. We have united our perspective of the facts, dressing the events with a magical realism so the reader can feel them just as we feel them. Open the book and travel through time to experience those events that were recorded for eternity. Happy Reading.

Men, Masculinities, and Aging introduces readers to the gendered nature of aging men’s lives. Edward H. Thompson, noted for his work on men and aging, explores the intersections of ethnicities, class, geographies, generations, and masculinities. The book offers a fresh perspective on men’s experiences with bodily aging, growing older in an ageist society, and navigating the virtual absence of cultural guidelines for being an aging man. The book also provides a sociological theory framework on how men navigate their social aging as they experience later life and very late life. Turning points such as grandfathering, the changeover from work to retirement, and the onset of health problems or becoming a career are discussed at length as Thompson frames these natural occurrences as now ordinary experiences as aging masculinities are no longer rarities. The book will provide educators, students, researchers, and practitioners a means to question standard assumptions about aging men and discuss what underlies most later-life masculinities.
