The Oldest Social Science?

This book looks critically at some of the underlying assumptions which shape our current understanding of the role and purpose of law and society. It focuses on adjudication as a social practice and as a set of governmental techniques. From this vantage point, it explores how the relationship between law, government and society has changed in the course of history in significant ways. At the centre of the argument is the elaboration of the notion of `adjudicative government'. From this perspective it is argued that the relationship between law and society must be conceived in a different way in the era of economics, sociology and statistics. The impact of these disciplines both constitutes `modernity' and unfolds a different role for law. The author argues that the traditional vision of the role of law, rooted in a complex set of hierarchical assumptions, is no longer adequate.

The Italian philosopher and militant Antonio Negri has been a provocative and controversial figure for over forty years. He has been a professor of law at the University of Padua, a labor organizer in the Veneto, a political prisoner in Rome, a member of Italian parliament, a political refugee in Paris and most recently, as a consequence of the success of his book Empire (written in collaboration with American Michael Hardt), an internationally influential theorist of globalization. He has written over forty other books, which have been translated into dozens of languages, and his work has challenged orthodoxy in intellectual history, political science, labor relations, theology, and literary and cultural studies. This book is the first comprehensive study of Negri's work in any language. It follows the development of Negri's critical framework and theoretical innovations from his early work as a historian of legal philosophy in the Fifties, through his period of intense and unconventional leftist activism during the Sixties and Seventies and his imprisonment and exile during the Eighties and Nineties, culminating in a clear, thorough and evenhanded account of his important contributions to the emerging study of - and struggle over - globalization. The book also includes discussions of Negri's critics and the reception of his work at each stage.

Counter-Imperial Churching for a Planetary Gospel: Radical Discipleship for Today
"We live in an era that requires us to radicalize what 'church' means." So writes Timothy Murphy, who argues that "church" should no longer be a noun, an entity, or an object, but rather an activity-what he calls churching; that is, a process of practicing discipleship with others in the way of Jesus. Weaving together different perspectives, including liberation theology, process thought, postcolonial thought and theology, alternative ecclesiological formulations, and political theory, Murphy develops an ecclesiology that is also a radical missiology-a way of being in the world that holds together both spirituality and social commitments. In the context of globalizing empire and climate chaos, Murphy offers a way forward for those who are seeking to make a deep commitment to an alternative way of living, of connecting, and of resisting.

40 Days and 40 Nights reveals the struggle of Jesus alone in the wilderness. The physical and mental challenges Jesus faced took him to the edge of survival. All of the pleasures and delights of the earth were used by Satan to tempt Jesus. When these failed, hell's demons attacked. But even hell's fury could not extinguish 'God with us.'All of creation watched Jesus' desert experience, for truly, life as a reflection of God's love made visible was dependent on the outcome.
