How to Build a Cheap Chopper

Choppers don't have to cost thirty thousand dollars. In fact, a chopper built at home can be had for as little as five thousand dollars. The key is the use of a donor bike for most of the components. How to Build a Cheap Chopper documents the construction of four inexpensive choppers with complete start-to-finish photo sequences. Least expensive is the metric chopper, based on a 1970s vintage Japanese four-cylinder engine and transmission installed in a hardtail frame. Don't look for billet accessories or a fancy candy paint job on this one. Next up, price wise, are two bikes built using Buell/Sportster drivetrains. The fact is, a complete used Buell or Sportster can be had for five thou or less. Now you've got more than an engine you have wheels and tires, brakes, hardware, lights, harness, and some sheet metal. Bolt all that stuff to a simple hardtail frame to create an almost-instant chopper. Most lavish, but still cheap by comparison with many of the bikes built today, is a big twin chopper built from carefully chosen aftermarket parts. A RevTech engine and five-speed tranny set in a Rolling Thunder frame. Accessorize from the swap meet and add a simple one-color paint job to create a bike no one needs to be ashamed of.

For over 14 years, Brent Vandervort, owner of Fatman Fabrications, has written a technical column for the "Goodguy's Gazette," the monthly publication of the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. His new book, "Building Hot Rods: 30 Years of Advice from Fatman Fabrication's Brent VanDervort," combines the best of those columns into one book.Hot rodding has changed from being primarily populated by the mechanics and hands-on workers of years ago. Today, many Rodders have the enthusiasm, but lack practical experience for the problem solving that makes building a hot rod such an enjoyable adventure. Vandervort's columns, respected and well read all these years, are designed to answer the questions of those car builders and customizers. An engineering degree and 30 years of experience designing and building some of the most innovative hot rod chassis components in the world give Vandervort a unique perspective on the technical side of hot rodding. With 144 pages, over 50,000 words and 200 photos and illustrations, "Building Hot Rods: 30 Years of Advice from Fatman Fabrication's Brent VanDervort" gives both new, and experienced hot rodders and car builders the information they need. Whether it's help installing a front frame clip in an old Ford, or solving a problem with an aftermarket fuel injection system installed in a early Mustang, the answers that current car builders need are all here.

Custom Motorcycle Fabrication

Custom Motorcycle Fabrication

Custom Motorcycle Fabrication starts at the beginning with a discussion of the materials commonly used to fabricate custom motorcycle frames, fenders, brackets, and all the rest. This discussion includes steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Joining metal (that is, welding) is an essential part of building almost anything and the copy here includes TIG and MIG welding, as well as Stick and Oxy/Acetylene welding. In each case, the author covers sub topics including penetration, strength, getting started, and the relative size of the heat affected zone. Most custom motorcycle frames, as well as many of the brackets that hold things together, are made from tubing. Thus, the book includes an entire section on bending and notching tubing to achieve a precise fit between any two parts prior to welding. A good fabricator must be skilled at machining on both a mill and a lathe. The author walks the reader through the basics for both types of machining: set up, cutting speed, tools, lubrication, cooling, and safety. Some commonly fabricated parts such as handle bars and exhaust systems are covered as separate topics, along with sections on building simple brackets and mounts.
