In September 1809, as most of the western world lay under the shadow of Napoleon Bonaparte, an aged aristocrat at Europe's further edge was sinking still deeper into the mud of degradation and oppression. Greece was struggling to survive. Into this appears a young man, called Byron who is to be haunted by Missolonghi.

Lured into service as a 1st Class Volunteer, young Christopher joins a ship of the line in Nelson's navy. During his time spent in the midshipmen's mess he participates fully in the life of the ship's crew, culminating in the Battle of Trafalgar. But HMS Nonesuch never existed ... and after the battle Christopher is transported back to the 21st century.

Sally is miserable in bed with measles but she has been given The Quilt which takes her on magical journeys. Each time she strokes a patch on the quilt she becomes a time traveller attending a Victorian Christmas party, a funfair in the 1930s, going on an escapade with Bonnie Prince Charlie, joining in a medieval Mayday, going on a Georgian Mystery and becoming part of a fairy tale fantasy.
