What is the unforeseen force that drives young Henry Jaeger from his roots, upon a pilgrimage into the darkness and then into the light? What is created out of the wilderness, is a livestock and grain empire lasting many generations.The story leaps ahead a century, when another young 'Jaeger' returns from the US Marines, enters college and achieves gridiron immortality, only to travel the same "Long Dark Ride", as did his forebears, the legendary "Ghost Dancer", many generations ago.

In the nation's capital, the inauguration is savagely interrupted by a cadre of middle eastern extremists, turning the capital into a meat grinder via an RPG attack. Both outgoing and incoming administrations are obliterated, except for the incoming Vice President, Lars Magnusson, who's life hangs by a thread. Shortly thereafter, a series of buildings explode in a major metropolitan city and the authorities are left without a clue. Months later, the nation is in the midst of the worst drought in memory and is set ablaze by a low tech assault by extremists, driving the nation into chaos. This and a host of other problems greet the now recovered President, back from the dead and virtually alone. Jaeger, now gone International, contacts a former associate, Nestor Magellan, to help him settle a score with the head of the Corsican Mafia, Malatesta Scaramanga. Once again a vortex of plots and subplots, bring a hoard of antagonists and protagonists together, giving life to some, while ending the lives of others in a breathless race to the finish and Jaeger is brought to Washington DC, to reunite with someone encountered long ago, the embattled President, Lars Magnusson.
