The Politics of Child Daycare in Britain

The Politics of Child Daycare in Britain

Child daycare is a crucial issue for gender equality. In Britain its provision, and especially publicly provided or subsidised daycare, has been meagre in comparison with a range of European States. In seeking to explain childcare policy in post-war Britain to the present, this study focuses primarily on the institutional context. It shows how the liberal state tradition, limiting intervention in the private family, and market spheres has intersected with an issue that impinges on family responsibilities and, arguably, requires public resources for its effective resolution. The book also argues that liberalism - in practice an eminently flexible approach - cannot on its own explain policy. Account must be taken of the gender assumptions of policy-makers and their principal advisers, including in the past trade unions; of the centralization of the British governmental process; of the weakness and fragmentation of the childcare lobby, including the less than wholehearted involvement of the women's movement; and of the sheer contingencies of timing.
Professional Knowledge in Primary Physical Education
This book is a concise and practical guide to the development of professional knowledge in primary physical education. Covering core concepts and key skills and exploring the everyday reality of working in primary physical education (PE), the book describes the essential professional knowledge needed to become an effective PE teacher at the primary level. Placing a strong emphasis on inclusive practice and including useful features in every chapter, such as case studies and guides to further reading, the book explains how the ‘professional knowledge model’ can be applied in primary physical education, acting as a framework for practitioners to explore and improve their own professional practice. Introducing the principles of fundamental movement in the context of child development, the book examines key professional skills, from planning and observation to assessment and advocacy, as well as other areas of professional knowledge that practitioners will need over the course of a career, such as working with others in primary PE and whole school approaches to movement. This book is essential reading for any teacher, subject leader, trainee, student, coach or instructor working in physical education at the primary or elementary level.

This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of the historian and public moralist E. A. Freeman since the publication of W. R. W. Stephens’ Life and Letters of Edward A. Freeman (1895). While Freeman is often viewed by modern scholars as a panegyrist to English progress and a proponent of Aryan racial theory, this study suggests that his world-view was more complicated than it appears. Revisiting Freeman’s most important historical works, this book positions Thomas Arnold as a significant influence on Freeman’s view of world-historical development. Conceptualising the past as cyclical rather than unilinear, and defining race in terms of culture, rather than biology, Freeman’s narratives were pervaded by anxieties about recapitulation. Ultimately, this study shows that Freeman’s scheme of universal history was based on the idea of conflict between Euro-Christendom and the Judeo-Islamic Orient, and this shaped his engagement with contemporary issues.
