Å skrive livet; hans fineste brev (1872-1890) er som en usensurert selvbiografi om Van Gogh. Brevene tar for seg livet, kunsten, drømmene og nederlagene. De er visuelle og poetiske, kunnskapsrike og litterære. Maleren viser seg som en intelligent og følsom forfatter. Van Gogh er blant de kunstnerne som skriver aller best om sitt liv og virke. Brevene viser hvordan han over en periode på under ti år klarer å utvikle seg som kunstner, og hvordan han på under fem år maler alle de bildene som vi kjenner og verdsetter så høyt i dag. Men det skjedde ikke uten kamp. Han slet med å finne sin vei som ung og var gjennom dype religiøse grublerier før broren Theo, som skulle bli hans viktigste støtte, penset ham inn mot malingen. Deretter slet han med alt fra økonomi til alvorlige psykiske problemer. Samtidig malte han det som skulle erobre verden først etter at han hadde tatt livet av seg 37 år gammel i Auvers-sur Oise i 1890. Denne boken inneholder hans fineste brev og 110 originale skisser 1872-1890. Det er en sensasjon at dette utvalget nå endelig foreligger på norsk.

En bok som fått titeln Vincent van Gogh: De sista sjuttio dagarna. Van Gogh bodde de sista sjuttio dagarna av sitt liv i byn Auvers strax norr om Paris. Han var inne i ett rasande produktivt skede av sitt korta liv. På dessa 70 dagar målade han mer än 70 stora oljemålningar, mer än en stor tavla om dagen. Han hade nyligen tagit sig igenom sin värsta psykotiska kris och fick nu uppleva en kort hoppfull tid som slutade tvärt när han ändade allt med en revolverkula den 29 juli 1890. Från Auvers skrev han också ett antal mycket intressanta brev, av vilka 24 finns bevarade. 15 är till brodern Theo, sex till systern och modern, ett till Paul Gauguin, ett till värdparet Ginoux som han tidigare hade hyrt av och ett till en konstkritiker Isaäcson. Denna bok innehåller samtliga dessa brev, för första gången i svensk översättning, samt alla skisser och teckningar som ingår i breven. Dessutom återger vi i färg åtta av de oljemålningar som omtalas i breven.
