In 1746, David Brainerd visited an Indian on the shores of the Susquehanna River where Williamsport, Pennsylvania now stands. It was his most westward visit and at the time he suffered greatly from tuberculosis of which he died just fourteen months later. We will never know the eternal effects of his preaching but the question is the stuff of which fiction is made of. Ahanu, one of the last of the Susquehannock tribe, is disillusioned, deeply bitter, and on his own until he reaches the Great Island. On his way to the Island, he joins three other young braves who seek revenge for the changes forced upon them by the White man. But Ahanu finds that murdering innocent settlers will not satisfy his need for revenge. He has also discovered other feelings when he first lays eyes on Siskia, the chief's daughter. She wants nothing to do with him for her heart was promised to another--Pontiac, a young man full of ambition. But Pontiac's profession as a Praying Indian presses her father into action. They have lost enough of their heritage. He will not lose his daughter to the White man's God Spirit Rock follows the lives of Ahanu and Siskia as they find themselves in the throes of the French and Indian War, the western migration of Pennsylvania's tribes, and the horrors of the Gnadenhutten Massacre. But through it all, the faith which they have found proves to be the anchor that will keep them safely secured on the True Rock, Jesus Christ.

Matthew 17 tells the story of Peter fishing for money at the Lord's command. We usually picture Peter out on the Sea of Galilee with a fishing net catching loads of fish, but here we find him fishing with a hook for one fish.Seen from the little fishy's point of view, this delightful little story packs a whopper of a lesson for us all--God is in the detail and He WILL take care of His children
Psalm 119: A Devotional Including Quotes from Charles H. Spurgeon's Devotional Commentary
Psalm 119, the longest psalm in the Bible, has been a favorite because of its concentration on the Word of God. This devotional is a short, verse by verse study which includes comments from Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a favorite preacher/commentator of mine. His writings are timeless and his wit, amazing I have purposed to write my thoughts BEFORE peeking at Spurgeon's comments and have been doubly blessed to find that he often makes similar remarks, adding the shine and gloss which can only come from his great wealth of wisdom.

"By the still waters..." This is the place where our Lord desires to lead each of His dear children. In my mind, I see the lush green pastures, sweet grass rolling in the gentle breeze like the surging waves of the ocean. Then, over the knoll and down at the meadow's edge, the tree-line gives way to reveal a beautiful stream which winds its way along a gentle slope and widens into a deep, peaceful pool. No ripples, no rocks-the water is deep and inviting to the wary sheep. They come, unafraid and unhindered, and slowly drink-sweet, calm satisfaction. Tranquility is everywhere. It draws you close, and you want to stay there forever. It's a challenge to study God's Word in this harried world, but we seek to know it Author better-our Creator God, Savior, and Friend. "Still Waters" was written to refresh your soul as challenge you to become a child of God who can ride out the storms of life and calmly reflect the peace of God while doing so. That sort of life only comes by spending time at Jesus' feet...beside the still waters
