This book grew out of a series of articles about paperback distribution which I wrote and which Publishers Weekly pub-lished in March and April of 1975. The idea for the series came from Lila Freilicher, assistant editor of P~ and to her I wish to express special thanks. Other PW colleagues offered help, criticism and encouragement when my enthusiasm was flagging; among them Arnold W. Ehrlich, Chandler B. Grannis, Jean Norrington and Miriam Phelps. Many people in the paperback industry, in granting me inter-views and behind-the-scenes scenarios, were generous with their time and their counsel. I want to thank particularly Stanley Budner, Ronald Busch, Edward L. Butler, Joe Byrne, Ross Claiborne, Alun Davies, Robert Fair de Graff, John Dessauer, Robert G. Diforio, Oscar Dystel, Sidney Graedon, Dr. Donald Hauss, Howard Kaminski, Abe Koppleman, Freeman Lewis, Esther Margolis, Peter M. Mayer, Helen Meyer, John Meszaros, David Moscow, Patrick O'Connor, Ed Pendergast, Russell Reynolds, Gerald Rubinsky, Louis Satz, Herbert K. Schnall, Leon Shimkin, Roysce Smith, Richard Snyder, Carl W. Tobey, George Wright and Francis Zinni. Whatever collective wisdom is in this book is theirs. The mistakes, of course, are mine.

This memoir depicts the Waffle House as a microcosm of humanity where Gandhi would not be out of place meeting the twelve disciples and hookers and addicts sit in booths next to agents of the Department of Justice. It shows a world where coffee is the beverage of communion, good and evil become blurred, and real life never mirrors exploits in the movies. Looking back on his journey for justice in an unjust world, Smith recalls various events in his career not as heroic adventures but as daily procedures where he does what he can with his limited resources and intelligences. Ultimately he finds storytelling, not a gun, to be the most effective weapon to confront the dark. Review: "Waffle House Diaries" . . . recalls a 30-year career in enforcing federal drug laws--the good, the bad and the ugly as he calls it--of working for the Department of Justice. In the book, Smith recounts one occasion while on surveillance to arrest a group of smugglers offloading marijuana in the middle of a river and finds himself instead helping to rescue two men from a helicopter which had crashed into the river in the midst of heavy fog. When he is injured in a car crash, he soon finds that doctors in Berkeley refused to treat "pigs." And on three different occasions he was forced to draw his gun to protect himself and those around him. --Severo Avila, The Rome News Tribune

The building that is home to the Presidents has gone through tremendous changes over the 221 years of its history. The burning by the British in 1814 resulted in the first complete rebuilding of its interior. In 1902 Teddy Roosevelt remodeled the whole ground level to update and "modernize" it. President Coolidge replaced the roof and added to the third floor in 1927. Harry Truman, in the early 1950s, completely gutted and rebuilt the White House because of major structural safety issues. As a result, very little of the original material, except for the exterior walls, remains in this historic residence. Fortunately, over the years, collectors have preserved and cherished little pieces of history that were once a small part of the President's House and witnessed eventsthat shaped our nation. Gavels, canes, bricks, nails and other amazing souvenirs made with this material survived and now proudly reside in collections and museums around the country.Hundreds of photographs and stories document this collection of treasures made from the most recognizable and historic building in this country, if not the entire world.....The White House.

Christ Letters: Letter 1 by Wayne Smith is a deeply reflective and spiritually enriching work that invites readers into a direct and heartfelt exploration of Christian faith through a series of imagined letters from Christ Himself. Anchored in scripture and inspired by the essence of Christ's teachings, this book serves as both a personal devotional and a profound theological reflection. In this first letter, the author presents a compassionate voice, one that reaches across time, culture, and doctrine to speak directly to the soul. Written with reverence and humility, Letter 1 addresses the core themes of love, forgiveness, inner transformation, and the divine relationship between humanity and God. Through Christ's voice, readers are called to examine their own lives, return to spiritual truths, and embrace the path of grace and purpose. Wayne Smith offers more than a retelling of Biblical principles; he provides a living message, one that encourages believers and seekers alike to feel the presence of Christ as near, personal, and real. Whether you are new to Christianity or have walked the path of faith for years, this book will inspire a deeper connection to the teachings of Jesus and ignite a renewed sense of hope and commitment. Christ Letters: Letter 1 is the beginning of a spiritual conversation that transcends religion and denomination, guiding readers into the heart of divine wisdom and eternal love.
