Vertical Specialization and Inclusive Growth in China discusses the two interrelated developments that have transformed the Chinese economy in recent years. First, the global community has increased calls to foster inclusive economic growth, with China embracing this trend. Second, the explosive growth in China’s trade resulting from international vertical specialization production and trade networks which has complicated the notion of inclusive growth in the Chinese context. This book assesses these two trends quantitatively, giving evidence of the link between vertical specialization and inclusive growth, and then decomposing the inclusive growth effects of vertically specialized trade into six components: GDP growth, export growth, FDI, environment, employment, and innovation. It further explores the differing impact of conventional trade and processing trade on inclusive growth, providing direction for future policy. This second book by the author to consider vertical specialization stresses the importance of integration in driving inclusive growth.

Scientific explanation, laws of nature, and causation are crucial and frontier issues in the philosophy of science. This book studies the complex relationship between the three concepts, aiming to achieve a holistic synthesis about explanation–laws–causation. By reviewing Hempel's scientific explanation models and Salmon's three conceptions – the epistemic, modal, and ontic conception – the book suggests that laws are essential to explanation and that our understanding of laws will help solve the problems of the latter. Concerning the nature of laws, this book tackles both the problems of regularity approach and necessitarian approach. It also proposes that the ontological order of explanation should be from events (or processes) to causation, then to regularity (laws), and finally to science system, but the epistemological order should be from science system to laws to explanation and causation. In addition, this book examines the legitimacy of ceteris paribus laws, the connection between explanation and reduction, the relation between explanation and interpretation, and some other issues closely related to explanation–laws–causation. This book will attract scholars and students of philosophy of science, natural sciences, social sciences, etc.

It focuses on the relationship between GATS/WTO national treatment obligations and China's banking law. Tracing the history of national treatment in China, the book compares the treatment of foreign-funded banks with the treatment of Chinese-funded banks and examines the structure and shortcomings of the existing banking law framework in China. Offering suggestions as to how the framework could be restructured and analysing the economic and political bases of an integrated banking law framework, the book argues that reorganization would bring about greater consistency with GATS/WTO national treatment requirements. The book also explores the ambiguous definition of prudential carve-out, the subtle relationship between GATS national treatment and market access based on WTO cases, national treatment clauses in China’s bilateral investment treaties, and special treatment on banking in China’s free trade agreements. The book explores how ethnic minority culture is integrated into school practices inside and outside classrooms in Southwest China.The author investigates the challenges in teaching and administration teachers have encountered in Chinese ethnic minority regions, specifically problems faced by teachers in ethnic Dai and ethnic Tujia; and how pre-service teachers are trained in current teacher education programmes in ethnic minority regions. This book combines multiple research methods, experiment, survey, and design science, as well as traditional measurements and neurophysiological techniques that can capture a variety of cognitive behaviors in human information processing, providing more solid and comprehended research findings. While the focus of the book is the modelling of process models and rules, the methods and techniques used in this book can also be adopted and applied to broader conceptual modelling research incorporating a variety of notations (e.g. UML, ER diagrams) or ontologies.It is a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering of the University of Queensland, Australia. In 2018, the PhD dissertation won the “CAiSE PhD Award,” granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of information systems engineering.

While migrant workers become the backbone of China’s fast growing economy, internal migration and its impacts on various aspects of social life in China have been an increasing concern of both the Chinese general public and the academics. It is timely, therefore, that identities of and stances towards migrant workers represented in China’s media are subject to discourse analysis and sociolinguistic research. This book examines how identities of and stances towards migrant workers have been constructed, transformed and mediated in China’s media discourse, and it investigates the media strategies and practices constructing these media products. This book provides a comprehensive study of how the media representation of migrant workers is interacting with the sociocultural transformation in China. The findings and discussions of the book offer critical insights into media discourse and practice in contemporary China which will be of interest to scholars and research students in discourse studies, sociolinguistics, media and communication studies, and China studies.

This book contributes insights into second language (L2) students’ learning of academic genres in English for academic purposes (EAP) writing classes by its focus on the current EAP practice in the context of higher education of China. It presents knowledge construction of genre learning research in L2 writing and English for specific purposes (ESP) genre studies, and reports an in-depth qualitative inquiry into three issues of instruction-based genre learning in an academic writing class: students’ learning process of an academic genre in the community of an EAP writing class, students’ individual factors in the learning process, and genre knowledge development through engagement in genre-focused writing instruction. The book has theoretical implications for learning English for academic purposes as well as for learning English as a foreign language in general. It also has pedagogical implications for genre teaching in EAP at Chinese universities and similar educational contexts.

Revision with unchanged content. Traditional contrastive rhetoric research is often restricted to the tex-tual level of analysis. By providing both a textual and contextual view of genre across languages and cultures, this book presents a frame-work for contrastive rhetoric research which moves beyond the text into the context of production and interpretation of the text. The book examines the textual patterning of Australian and Chinese commen-taries and interpersonal and intertextual features of the texts, as well as considers possible contextual factors which might contribute to the formation of the newspaper commentaries in the two different languages and cultures. This analysis contributes towards answering the questions: How do writers in different languages and cultures position themselves in relation to the topics that they write about? How do they manipulate the topic and address their readers by the use of various linguistic strategies and devices? How do the roles of the press and opinion discourses mediate and influence constructions of the Chinese and English commentaries? How do discourses of terrorism in these two settings relate to textual and intertextual practices? The book is addressed to researchers in contrastive rhetoric and discourse research. It is also directed towards scholars in intercultural communi-cation and translation.

What does Chinese multicultural education look like from an outside perspective, as seen by a Chinese scholar? This is the topic of this thesis which examines multicultural education from a cultural, political, and economic perspective, in order to provide insight for educational policy in the context of China. Wei Wang is an education researcher at the Divison of Education, Department of Sociology, Lund University. His research interests are multiculturalism and multicultural education, education development and social equality, ethnic minority education in China and teacher education. Between Modern Schooling and Cultural Heritage is his doctoral thesis.

This thesis presents geological, petrological, geochemical, and zircon U–Pb–Lu–Hf isotopic field data for representative Precambrian lithologies in the Western Liaoning-Northeastern Hebei Provinces along the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). It describes late Neoarchean (2.64–2.48 Ga) supracrustal metavolcanic rocks and granitoid gneisses; late Paleoproterozoic (1.72–1.68 Ga) Jianping alkaline plutons and Pinggu alkaline volcanic rocks; and newly discovered ~1.23 Ga mafic dykes. The nature of magma sources and genesis of each magmatic episode are investigated, and the Precambrian (~2.6–1.2 Ga) lithospheric mantle evolution and crust-mantle interaction processes are established for the first time –aspects that provide important constraints in our understanding of the Precambrian crustal evolution and geodynamic processes in the region studied.
