El pueblo fue fundado en 1495, cuando una banda de conquistadores que, tras la ca da de Tenochtitl n, hab an estado cazando en las monta as a los ltimos guerreros guila aztecas, encontraron plata en las cenizas del fuego de la noche anterior. Eran trece conquistadores, cuyos descendientes gobernaron el pueblo por cuatrocientos a os, el m s rico de M xico en su momento, con una tesorer a, una casa de moneda, incluso una pera y por supuesto una catedral, hasta que Pancho Villa y su Divisi n del Norte tomaron el pueblo en 1914 y fusilaron a los descendientes de los conquistadores, quienes se llevaron a la tumba la locaci n del tesoro secreto. Terminada la Revoluci n, una serie de aventureros, atra dos por la leyenda del Tesoro de la Sierra Madre (algunos dec an que hab a trece tesoros), dinamit la mayor a de los edificios del pueblo medieval-pero del tesoro, o tesoros, nada nunca se supo.
