Spores is a collection of seventeen short stories. Whilst they cover a variety of themes there is more than a hint of the supernatural about some of them. They owe a little to the influence of MR James, master of the ghost story and also the weird tales of Fritz Leiber. The rise of the reality television programme and the dire consequences of getting involved form the basis of two stories. Humour black or otherwise does have a part to play elsewhere. Although the locations when mentioned are various, the North of England gets a good showing. William Hartley is a freelance writer and researcher, the author of more than seventy articles and several books.

Borders and frontiers seem interchangeable but in fact they are separate entities. In Contention City To Stalingrad the author explores both physical borders in some less visited parts of the world from South Lebanon to the North West Frontier of Pakistan and frontiers at home both cultural and economic. The book takes the reader from the Canal Zone in Panama to Britain's oldest Rugby League stadium, from hunting with fell hounds high in the Lake District to some of the last truly amateur sports: Bull Running in Pamplona and Bore Surfing on the Severn. William Hartley is a former soldier, author and freelance writer. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society a Chartered Geographer and Fellow of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers

The Dynamics of a Coalfield looks at the decision making process in land use and resource exploitation during the nineteenth century. The coalfield in question lay in a part of West Yorkshire where wool textiles was the dominant industrial activity. This meant that despite being a vital industry coal had to fight for its place. Due to the landownership pattern decision making was concentrated in relatively few hands. The landowners were required to reconcile the requirements of an extractive industry with wool textiles and the needs of an expanding population. To explain what was going on the author utilises Game Theory to consider the various strategic choices available to landowners.William Hartley has published a number of articles on the coal industry of the nineteenth century. In particular he has sought to highlight the role played by primitive mining operations in supporting industrial development.

It's all going on at Snapethorpe Prison. There's a dead prisoner and an inspector who wants to find out what happened. The governor doesn't trust anyone and for good reason. The local union committee is plotting against him and each other. In the kitchen there's a caterer with a gambling problem and a chaplain who wants to know where the bodies are to be (re)buried. Down at headquarters in the Press Office they're trying to do damage limitation, whilst up at Snapethorpe yet more scandals are getting into the newspapers.Welcome to the world of a big local prison back in the eighties, where getting through the day was seen as something of an achievement.

Innate is set in a mill town in the North of England. The story opens in the 1890s. A series of attacks on young women lead Detective Sergeant Rino Rossi into the sordid underbelly beneath late Victorian respectability. Fast forward to the 1970s and a university lecturer is leading a precarious existence in the town, which is now in steep decline. There is a link though between the present day and the events of eighty years ago. It is an hereditary evil which corrupts....William Hartley is a writer whose first novel Clink is a satire set in a prison. Innate marks a change of direction, being part detective story, part tale of hereditary madness across two eras.
