Adam Ferguson and the Idea of Civil Society

Adam Ferguson and the Idea of Civil Society

Adam Ferguson, a friend of David Hume and Adam Smith, was among the leading Scottish Enlightenment figures who worked to develop a science of man. He created a methodology for moral science that combined empirically based social theory with normative moralising. He was among the first in the English-speaking world to make use of the terms civilization, civil society and political science. Craig Smith explores Ferguson's thought, and examines his attempt to develop a genuine moral science and its place in providing a secure basis for the virtuous education of the new elite of Hanoverian Britain. The Ferguson that emerges is far from the stereotyped image of a republican sceptical about commercial society and much closer to the mainstream of the Scottish Enlightenment and its defence of the new British commercial order.

Joe Hill emigrated to the United States in 1902 where he joined the Industrial Workers of the World and became the most celebrated labor songwriter in the country. In 1915, he was executed for a crime that is widely believed he did not commit, and in the 1930s, the song "Joe Hill" was created to honor this legendary labor martyr. This book, the first to tell the story of the song "Joe Hill," follows the song's national and international diaspora as it developed from a labor union ballad into an international anti-war anthem and rallying cry for all people to rise up against their oppressors. The story is told in the historical contexts of the times through which it traveled and includes the champions of the song who ensured its continued relevance, including Paul Robeson, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Utah Phillips.

A First Amendment Profile of the Supreme Court focuses on the nine justices of the United States Supreme Court and determines their frames for assessing First Amendment cases. In each of the chapters, a justice is profiled in terms of his or her claims during the nomination hearings and the positions they have taken in significant Supreme Court decisions. These chapters provide a rhetorical frame that each of these justices would find appealing regarding First Amendment case law.

I'll say it was always dark. I never saw your face.' 'Is that a promise? Are you going to keep your word, if I trust you?' 'YES!' Will Booker stood up. 'You know , I think I believe you , Missy. Just so you believe me...' The gunshot came as a surprise. Missy heard the echo crackling back from the trees as she was gasping at the incredible pain in her cheat. She tasted mud, her scream strangling in her throat. The next bullet jolted her, hitting below the ribs. She heard the second echo from the trees. She saw the smoke rising oddly from Will's jacket pocket. Ten years ago, sleepy Shiloh Springs was shaken as five teenagers were clubbed and shot to death and a sixth left for dead. But now the killer's conviction has been overturned after allegations that his rights were violated on his arrest. Rick Trueblood is a careworn private investigator working for the Shiloh County prosecutor's office; a veteran loner still grieving for a daughter murdered eight years ago- a crime he has never been able to solve. The judge has allowed just sixty days for the prosecutor's office to find enough evidence to retry the case. But as Rick struggles to re-investigate a trail long gone cold he starts to uncover a rat's nest of intrigue and duplicity with ramifications that lead closer to home than he could have possibly imagined. Booker in the meantime is out on bail. All he wants with his freedom is to kidnap and murder the two adolescent daughters of the minister who brought him to faith. When Booker finally snatches the girls, the local authorities follow procedures and file reports. Rick, on the other hand, has learned something about the way Booker thinks. In the desperate hours that follow, Rick recovers his instinct for the hunt, and with it, quite unexpectedly, a renewed passion for life.
