This, the first of two volumes covering the railways of Devon, follows the routes of the two main lines that enter the county from the east. Firstly, the former Western Region line is examined as it runs from Whiteball Tunnel in the Blackdown Hills and down along the attractive Culm and Exe Valleys to the county town of Exeter. It then takes the reader over the former Southern Region line from Axminster through rolling countryside to Exeter where the two routes meet. In addition, the book explores the branch lines that are still open in this part of the county; firstly, the one to Exmouth, which runs beside the Exe estuary for half of its length, and then by way of a contrast, the line to Barnstaple, which penetrates the rural heart of Devon to reach the county's north coast. Finally, a look is taken at the Okehampton branch, which has just been acquired by Network Rail and is about to have its passenger service reinstated. Illustrated with over 180 colour photographs, only a few of which have been published previously, this volume records many of the changes that have taken place over the last 35 years to both the infrastructure and trains. Coverage is mainly of service trains, but a number of special workings are also included. It depicts some of the older locomotive classes in their final days as well as the traction that provides today's services.

'Fifty Shades of Beige' is my first poetry anthology and, quite possibly, my last. It is a set of poems about life in the retirement years, a subject which has given me much material since I joined the ranks back in 2009. I am indebted to all those who have unwittingly given me inspiration. Names have been necessarily changed in order to avoid legal action. I hope you will enjoy entering a world where health issues are never far away from conversations, where Knit and Natter is dominated by the latter and where once orderly garages are now rammed with offspring's worldly belongings. Where else would you have an anthology featuring dishwashers, bins and Wordle? So, pour yourself a dry sherry, find your slippers and retire to your cosy armchair. You might just manage to read a few poems before 'Tipping Point' comes on.

My first anthology of poems, 'Fifty Shades of Beige' was a wry and affectionate look at retirement. As I approach my three score years and ten in May 2024 this second collection looks back through my life from childhood to retirement. For those who have gone from sherbet to sherry, British Bulldogs to Bridge Club, the Rolling Stones to... well, the Rolling Stones, 'Seventy Shades of Age' will evoke many memories and, hopefully, amuse.

Nathan Pond's story is unique. His football journey has taken him from North West Counties League football on bumpy pitches in front of less than a hundred spectators to the heights of League One, Wembley and International football. Playing in seven different levels with Fleetwood Town earned him a Guinness World Record in 2014. 574 games for Fleetwood involved countless knocks, injuries, cuts, bruises and suspensions but also there has been the joy of six promotions with the same club. In 2018 he was back in the history books as his trailing foot led to the first goal awarded through VAR in English football. As Pondy begins his first steps in coaching his story is being told. ( Mainly Mendip Rail to Exeter from 1990s on). - 'Speedlink', 'Enterprise' etc. Wagonload from 1970s to the end (2000s). Including a look at various locations, including Barnstaple, Whimple (cider), Pinhoe (bricks), Exeter, Plymouth, Cornwall (calcified seaweed) etc. - A short look at a couple of special 'one off' traffics. (1990s) - A section on 'civils' traffic, p.w. work trains. (Length might depend on space available after the above!), and - Railway ballast trains, mainly from Meldon Quarry (a little steam, photos from 1960s to the end). - Weed killers, RHTT and test trains.(Photos under the different sections could include some wagon views.
