In Portugal, the photographs include a steam journey up the broad-gauge Douro Valley line from Oporto to Barca D’Alva and the local narrow-gauge lines around Oporto. In Switzerland, narrow- and standard-gauge Alpine lines are featured, including the well-known Bernina Pass and Jungfrau railway. In Austria, a variety of steam locomotives are seen, as well as some vintage electric locos of the 1920s and 1930s. Locations include the Eisenerz-Vordernberg rack and pinion line carrying steam-hauled iron ore trains up gradients of as much as 1 in 14. With previously unpublished images throughout, this nostalgic tour of Europe’s railways in the 1970s will delight enthusiasts both young and old.

'The text is clear, readable, and seeks to put difficult concepts in chemistry into context, explaining why a biologist will need to understand them. It is ideal for self-directed learning and I have every intention of recommending it to my students.' Professor John Nicholson, St Mary's University College, Twickenham 'I think this text is ground-breaking; it is ideal for bioscience students and covers all the chemical basics I would expect (and more). I will take great pleasure using this as a resource for my students.' Dr Mark Howard, School of Biosciences, University of KentChemistry for Biologists provides a focused yet chemically and mathematically rigorous introduction to those key aspects of chemistry that form the basis of biological processes. Written in a straightforward, accessible style, the book begins with an overview of basic chemical concepts. Building on these core principles, the reader is guided through subjects such as the structure and properties of organic molecules, equilibria, energetics, kinetics, biomolecules, reaction mechanisms, metabolism and structural methods. The relevance of each chemical concept to the study of biology is clearly explained at every stage, enabling students to develop a deep appreciation of the chemistry that underpins their chosen subject, and become confident in applying this knowledge to their own studies.Key features· Comprehensively covers the chemistry needed by all students seeking to understand biological processes at a fundamental level. · Numerous boxed features highlight key ideas and explore more advanced concepts.· Contains a wealth of engaging examples throughout the text, applying the theory to biology in practice.· Self-test question sets at the end of each chapter are included to help consolidate understanding of key concepts, and full answers are supplied at the back to enable students to assess their own progress.· An appendix of basic mathematical tools for biochemistry is included to help explain key mathematical concepts and, crucially, their relevance to the subject. For biology and biosciences undergraduates with little background in chemistry who need to bring their skills up to scratch quickly, and any students who wish to develop their confidence in chemistry to take their studies further, this book will be an invaluable resource.Dr David Reed holds an honorary fellowship with the University of Edinburgh. He has extensive experience in delivering chemistry courses to students of biological sciences.
LEFT BEHIND Answered Verse by Verse
Will unbelievers and half-hearted churchgoers have 7 more years to make up their minds about Christ after He raptures the Church? LEFT BEHIND gives them all a 'second chance.' But is that what Jesus taught? His parables of the talents, the wise and foolish virgins, the wheat and the tares, and the faithful and evil servant all show him returning unexpectedly with both rewards and punishments in his hands. Neither the parables nor the plain words of Christ teach a second chance for those surprised by his coming. But LEFT BEHIND does. Few Christians realize LEFT BEHIND tosses aside the teachings of Luther, Calvin, Tyndale, Wesley, Wycliffe and Spurgeon. Read dozens of quotes from these and other respected sources that show LEFT BEHIND strays far from the truths Bible readers have understood for centuries. Author of JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES ANSWERED VERSE BY VERSE and MORMONS ANSWERED VERSE BY VERSE (Baker Book House), David A. Reed is known worldwide as an expert in refuting false prophecy.

Escaping Poverty's Grasp

Escaping Poverty's Grasp

Despite decades of macroeconomic reforms, poverty reduction plans and rural growth strategies, poverty is persistent and environmental degradation is accelerating in the developing world. Though traditional economic indicators have improved in some countries, little has worked to open enduring economic and ecological opportunities to the rural poor. This unacceptable outcome grows, in large part, from the failure to place the needs of the poor at the centre of national development strategies and to link local level changes to urgently needed changes in national development policies. This book is designed to change all of that by showing how change must begin at the local level and, from there, push upwards to change policies and institutions at higher levels to remove political, economic and institutional impediments that stifle opportunities for the rural poor and improved environmental management. This approach challenges the notion that poverty reduction and improved natural resource management can originate with design masters in international organizations or national capitals.Working with teams in China, Indonesia, El Salvador, South Africa and Zambia, WWF devised the revolutionary '3xM' - micro (local), meso (sub-national) and macro (national) - Approach to analysing and intervening to change the poverty dimensions in a country. This approach helps improve the local environment and community livelihoods, and promotes policy and institutional changes at state/provincial and national levels that are essential for the sustainable, equitable development. This book provides both the tools and successful case studies to show practitioners how to adopt the 3xM Approach in diverse developing country contexts.
Structural Adjustment, the Environment and Sustainable Development
This is a pioneering study which should serve as a model for future research and will to a wide audience' Dharam Ghai, Director United Nations Research Institute for Social Development Structural Adjustment and the Environment (Earthscan, 1992) was the first book to fully examine the effects of 'structural adjustment programmes the economic reform policies required by the World Bank and IMF as part of their lending operations with borrowing countries. To widespread Critical acclaim it exposed the damaging environmental and social effects of structural adjustment policies, and called for a thorough revision of the then-current development policy. This new work; Structural Adjustment, the Environment and sustainable Development is a major step forward in the study of structural adjustment policies. It looks in detail at new research and analysis into their effects, and incorporates recent studies by a wide range of academics and policy-makers, leading experts and institutes. Focusing on nine in-depth case studies, the book examines the complex links between macroeconomic policies, social impacts and environmental outcomes, and takes a forward-looking perspective in outlining the alternatives to current structural adjustment policies. Review quotes for Structural Adjustment and the Environment 'Should be essential reading for all students of development' Third World Planning Review 'Breaks new ground in the debate on structural adjustment generally. and in the environment/development debate' International Affairs 'The most substantial contribution to date to what is undoubtedly an important area' Development and Change David Reed is director of the Macroeconomics for Sustainable Development Programme of WWF International, and editor of Structural Adjustment and the Environment (Earthscan, 1992). Economic Change Governance and Natural Resource Wealth
This volume analyzes the ways in which natural resource wealth has shaped authoritarian political regimes and statist economic systems in the countries of southern Africa in the post-colonial period. It consists of five essays. The first sets out the historical framework and emergence of natural resources as the crucial driver of economies in sub-Saharan Africa. Three essays, drawing on in-country research, focus on Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. They show how this explains the economic evolution of those countries - in particular, the impacts of economic and institutional changes on the bulk of the population, the rural poor. The final essay explores the nature of the changes and their neoliberal economic context, and the ways in which their harmful consequences might be relieved.
