This compulsively readable collection of profiles and essays by James Campbell, tied together by a beguiling autobiographical thread, proffers unique observations on writers and writing in the post-1950s period. Campbell considers writers associated with the "New Yorker" magazine, including John Updike, William Maxwell, Truman Capote, and Jonathan Franzen. Continuing his longterm engagement with African American authors, he offers an account of his legal battle with the FBI over James Baldwin's file and a new profile of Amiri Baraka. He also focuses on the Beat poets Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsberg, as well as writers such as Edmund White and Thom Gunn. Campbell's concluding essay on his childhood in Scotland gracefully connects the book's autobiographical dots.

Hundreds of hardy people have tried to carve out a living in the Alaskan bush, but few have succeeded as consistently as Heimo Korth. In The Final Frontiersman, Heimo's cousin James Campbell chronicles Korth's amazing life and adventures, creating a powerful, real-life epic of triumph and tragedy. Campbell spent two years witnessing firsthand the Korth family: Heimo, his wife Edna and their teenage daughters Rhonda and Krin. With impressive detail, the author recounts an everyday existence shaped by a harsh and unforgiving country. In their efforts to preserve the ecology of the land, the Korths lead a nomadic life, waiting patiently for the odd small plane to bring supplies and cultivating hard-earned hunting skills that are all that stand between them and lingering death. By turns inspiring and downright jolting, THE FINAL FRONTIERSMAN reads like a rustic version of the American Dream, in which the physical barriers of a stunning wilderness are no obstacle to forging a life outside of the mainstream.

Is Benjamin Franklin, the familiar cultural icon whose face appears on coins, currency, and postage stamps, in addition to being an affable inventor, printer, and humorist also an important American philosopher? In Recovering Benjamin Franklin, James Campbell attempts to "recover" Benjamin Franklin's role as philosopher. In the broad eighteenth-century understanding of the term "philosopher", most people would say that Franklin clearly qualifies as one. But since the beginning of the twentieth century, the meaning of the term has narrowed. What should be said about Franklin as philosopher in the current sense of the word?Part of the problem is that Franklin's thought is difficult to classify. Franklin is not a composer of lengthy, systematic treatises. Instead, we know him as the author of letters and essays, primarily short and often fragmentary, that were intended for diverse audiences. Was Franklin a thinker whose interests were nearly universal, or was he a dabbler who flew from topic to topic? Was he a minor intellectual who was incapable of sustained theoretical work, or was he a thinker who recognized that thought must function in the world? In answering these questions, Campbell provides a survey of the events in Franklin's rich life and explores his extraordinary place in American history, along the way challenging a series of popular misconceptions that are based upon narrow interpretations of Franklin's work. To foster a more adequate understanding, the author lays out in detail Franklin's ideas in four areas: science, religion, morality, and politics.

They're unhappy with Marti Lamartiniere's increasing popularity as she works to set a new course for the country's future, focused on opportunities for the poor. She's moving forward with big changes, and some people in high positions have very different plans for Haiti. On the bus and on the street, Nathan can feel he's being watched. As he gets closer to learning the fate of the goddaughter he adores, the trail of evil seems to lead to the highest echelons of power. The days have settled into an easy rhythm on Colby Cameron's farm, where there is an age-old comfort in the pattern of the stars, and where the fish and turtles expect their treats at the same time every evening. With his life in a good place in his forty-seventh year, the flight instructor's looking forward to keeping things exactly as they are. Fate, however, seems to have other plans for Colby.A $65 million dollar jet making its way into the local airport is the first harbinger of change. On board is a letter that will force Colby to rethink everything he thought he knew about his family and his past. Were they what they seemed, his days growing up in a typical Georgia family, years marked by beach vacations and hunting with his dad? If he wants to find out, the answer is waiting for him on a small island in the Bahamas. In the meantime, much to Colby's shock, there's a baby on the way for him and his wife, Aubrey. Motherhood has always been a dream for Aubrey, but he has mixed emotions. A baby in their forties means a wildly different future than the restful days and travel that had seemed to stretch out quietly before them in their middle age. Most importantly, he fears for Aubrey, whose age could mean complications for this fragile, growing life she has wanted for so long. With both his future and his past taking on new shapes, Colby aims his Cessna 182 for the turquoise waters, fishing boats, and sumptuous yachts of the Bahamas. There, more surprises wait, and it's possible not everyone has the best of motives.Against a backdrop of luxury and tropical adventure, Colby grapples with questions of family, second chances, and accepting with open arms the gifts life has to offer-even when those gifts take you by surprise.

This book reads Oscar Wilde as a queer theorist and Wilfred Owen as his symbolic son. It centers on the concept of 'male procreation', or the generation of new ideas through an erotic but non-physical connection between two men, and it sees Owen as both a product and a continuation of this Wildean tradition.
