Membrane Process Design Using Residue Curve Maps

Membrane Process Design Using Residue Curve Maps

Design and Synthesis of Membrane Separation Processes provides a novel method of design and synthesis for membrane separation. While the main focus of the book is given to gas separation and pervaporation membranes, the theory has been developed in such a way that it is general and valid for any type of membrane. The method, which uses a graphical technique, allows one to calculate and visualize the change in composition of the retentate (non-permeate) phase. This graphical approach is based on Membrane Residue Curve Maps. One of the strengths of this approach is that it is exactly analogous to the method of Residue Curve Maps that has proved so successful in distillation system synthesis and design.

It has been seven years since we published our first book 'Views from the back of the class' and so we thought that maybe it was time to share some further views and experiences from the students and instructors that hopefully will again inspire new and experienced Tai Chi players alike. The diversity of the articles within this second book, and the people who wrote them, is vast; many of the chapters have been submitted by students and teachers who contributed to the first book and are still with us. We hope it will make for another interesting read. There is a plethora of instructional form books, and even more deeply interesting theory and practice of Tai Chi literature; they have a recognized place in a practitioners reading. However sometimes reading people's personal experiences and feelings can trigger you to delve deeper into a certain area of Tai Chi; a trigger to exploring your own thoughts and experiences. With this in mind we included an Epilogue that contains a selection of writings that although not obviously linked to Tai Chi we thought you may enjoy, and were submitted to us for our monthly club newsletter by students and instructors. We are hoping, we have, as before, structured the chapters to ensure this tai chi book is a 'dip in' easy read, and often light-hearted view of tai chi life.

This is a unique book, an anthology of Tai Chi Chuan. Produced by pupils and teachers following the Cheng Man-Ching way of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, it paints a picture of the art seen not from a -how-to-do-it or the classics point of view, but from the experiences of those who are training: beginners, intermediate and advanced. It is enlived by excellent, right-on-the-button cartoons, guaranteed to raise a smile. The Description of a visit to England by a former pupil of Grand-Master Cheng, Master Tan Ching Ngee of Singapore, clarifies some important points about Grand-Master Cheng's approach which will be welcomed by all.The articles range far and wide, giving examples of stress reduction, martial application, humour, seriousness, beginning in the art and developing within it, and in so doing make Tai Chi Chuan more accessible to people thinking of taking it up, wondering where to turn for reassurance and so forth. It does so by showing how very ordinary (?) people approach and enjoy learning it.You can dip into the book at any chapter, as with an anthology, and share the experiences of students just like yourself....

Well here we are again only a year after our 2nd book "Up Close and Personal" (UCAP) was let loose on an unsuspecting public. The time between the first and second book was seven years, but you know the old saying "You wait for ages for a bus and then 2 come along together" well that seems to be true about our books. When we were compiling the chapters for UCAP, we found we had twice as many chapters as was sensible to inflict on you in one go. It has been said that Tai Chi is the "thinking man's Martial Art" but it may have been just too much thinking to do in one book; hence "Slowly Slowly Catch the Monkey" was born.

Leslie frogmarches men into writing letters again, followed by a 'how to' for kickstarting your own writing. Ten sets of fascinating letters about life, the universe and everything from nine Africans: Mark Peters the war photo journalist and first to snap Mandela released from prison, Glenn Caithness the boy next door desperately seeking advice on how to get a girlfriend, Marc Leistner the former EU banker offering surprising insights into true communication, Ian Downie the security specialist investigating the joys of food, wine and recipes, Mark Miles the S.T.E.M. thinker meditating on massive disruption via nanotechnology, Joel Greenberg the serial entrepreneur putting pen to paper, Craig Hepburn the 1986 Orlando Pirates goalkeeper bridging sporting divides, Charl Hugo the deep-thinking professor reflecting on the arts, spirituality and mortality, Graham Giles the employment lawyer and bibliophile - AND - last but not least one Brit: Mervyn Stutter the satirical songwriter and comedian, better known as The King of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If you enjoy subverting censorship based on gendered stereotypes the second part of the book Leslie's Guide for Writing to Men explains how you can initiate your own letter writing group, with each writer describing how he felt about being approached by a woman to be part of this one, followed by practical advice and templates for starting your own group and self-publishing your letters.
Understanding Distillation Using Column Profile Maps

Researchers share their pioneering graphical method for designing almost any distillation structure Developed by the authors in collaboration with other researchers at the Centre of Material and Process Synthesis, column profile maps (CPMs) enable chemical engineers to design almost any distillation structure using novel graphical techniques. The CPM method offers tremendous advantages over other design methods because it is generalized and not constrained to a particular piece of equipment. Understanding Distillation Using Column Profile Maps enables readers to understand, analyze, and design distillation structures to solve common distillation problems, including distillation by simple columns, side rectifiers and strippers, multiple feed columns, and fully thermally coupled columns. In addition, the book presents advanced topics such as reactive distillation, membrane permeation, and validation of thermodynamic models. For all these processes, the authors set forth easy-to-follow design techniques, solution strategies, and insights gained using CPMs. This book offers everything needed to fully understand and use CPMs as a design tool: Figures help readers understand how to use CPMs as design and optimization toolsExamples clearly illustrate how to solve specific problems using CPMsTutorials allow readers to explore key concepts through experimentationDesign and Optimization of Distillation Systems software package, developed for this book, enables readers to reproduce the examples in the book, follow the tutorials, and begin designing their own distillation systems With its many examples and step-by-step tutorials, Understanding Distillation Using Column Profile Maps is recommended for students in chemical engineering in advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. The book also provides new practical techniques that can be immediately applied by chemical engineering professionals in industry.
