When God wanted to act on his promise to save the world, he started with a family and gave them a mission. He spoke to Abram and his household and they became a family on mission. We see Jesus operating in the same way, gathering an extended-family-like group of disciples around himself before embarking on his mission. Jesus needed a family on mission.Within the Trinity, the unity of God is expressed in a diversity of persons, which means that at the very heart of God's nature is family on mission. And thus God's preferred mode of operation has always been family on mission. In fact, discipleship doesn't really work apart from the context of a family on mission. Without that texture, discipleship becomes programmatic and mechanical, not really producing people with the character and competency of Jesus. The good news is that today, Jesus our Brother and King is wanting to empower us to live as covenant families caught up in kingdom mission. It seems that the Holy Spirit is moving us away from the destructive dichotomy of Family OR Mission, where we can only do one or the other, away from the band-aid fix of Family AND Mission, where we keep them separate and manage boundaries and margins, toward the integrated life of Family ON Mission, where we wholeheartedly embrace being part of a covenant community AND with those people play our part in God's kingdom mission. This book is about our journey in leading a family on mission, as well as looking deeply at how Jesus built his family on mission in the Gospels, as well as practical strategies for growing as a family on mission, imitating Jesus as his disciples.

Welcome to the Building a Discipling Culture Study Guide We designed this guide to help you grasp, explore, and go deeper with the major concepts presented in Building a Discipleship Culture. The book was first published in 2005 and has gone on to become a global bestseller. Before diving in, we feel it's important to understand where and why this book was originally conceived. It came out of frustration and desperation that accompanied trying to disciple people who had little or no education, people who would traditionally never open a book and read it.The following LifeShapes were designed to help those who had the least access to training yet wanted to grow in their understanding of Jesus and the Bible. The simplicity of the shapes allowed for easy understanding. The LifeShapes prevented the overwhelm and intimidation that can accompany text-centric methods. They could be shared on a napkin over coffee or a brown bag over lunch. In this guide, we have attempted to make it again accessible and straightforward. It can be used by anyone, anywhere, and at any stage in their journey of faith. We pray that you will find many uses for this guide so that every disciple can be equipped in building a discipling culture in their homes, workplaces, school, and coffee shops. This guide does not go through Building a Discipling Culture exhaustively, but serves as a introduction through the key LifeShapes: The Matrix: Invitation & Challenge The Circle: Learning from Life The Triangle: Deeper Relationships The Semi-Circle: A Balanced Life The Square: Multiplying Life The Pentagon: Personal Calling The Hexagon: Definitive Prayer

As you know, I've spent more than two decades helping people around the world lead out in discipleship and mission. But as I look back, I can't help but ruminate on how many people who have led out the movement of discipleship and mission have embraced the effect rather than the cause. They focus on discipleship but overlook communication that so often sparks it to life.In these reflections, I've come to believe that communication usually comes first, and the awakening that happens through communication causes the effect of passion and palpable desire for discipleship and mission. So for me, it's time to rewind the process of discipleship by going back to understand the cause. I have spent the last few years doing this both at a personal and academic level, and now I want to share what I've learned as I've reflected on my experience and what I've seen in my studies that has so often held up a mirror to what I've experienced.

Confusion abounds regarding what it means to be missional. Is it about social action? An emphasis on outreach? Being organic instead of program-driven? This book provides succinct, clearly written, and biblical answers. With the theological insight of a scholar and the warm personal illustrations of a pastor, Dick Wiedenheft shares insights and experiences gained over his own fifteen-year missional journey. -What does missional mean? -Why is it important? -How will it change my life or my church? -What are some simple ways to begin? After reading this book, you will know what it means to be missional, why becoming missional is so important, and what practical steps you can take to begin. ""If you desire to better understand the meaning of missional, my suggestion is that you start here."" --Mike Breen, author of Building a Discipling Culture ""The Meaning of Missional removes the buzz from the word missional and provides a biblical framework and practical steps forward from an experienced practitioner. From the pastor to the ordinary follower of Jesus, this book will help move the church to live into her sentness again "" --Gina Mueller, board chair and regional hub leader, 3DM ""Simple and profound. Pastor Wiedenheft has done a masterful work in leading the readers of his book to the basics of the church and Christian life according to the Scriptures . . . This is a 'must' read for pastors and congregants in order to know more about the profound subject of the mission of God and its implications in simple but practical terms for the contemporary church."" --Samuel Barkat, Chief Organizational Development Officer, Wycliffe Bible Translators USA ""In The Meaning of Missional, Dick shares a working pastor's hope and humility as he offers a concise and concrete introduction to what 'missional' means for the life and work of a church . . . He is the best kind of guide because he's still doing the work he describes."" --Gregory L. Jao, Senior Assistant to the President, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship ""As a pastor, Dick Wiedenheft has ached over how easily we the church get off track. We forget that we are first and foremost a missional people, for the simple reason that we belong to a missional God. What Dick has written comes out of serious biblical study, extensive theological inquiry, and, most importantly, working it all out in the pressures and challenges of pastoral ministry. I will be commending this book as widely as possible."" --Darrell Johnson, Regent College Dick Wiedenheft is a pastor and a certified coach and frontier leader with the 3DM Missional Discipleship movement. He holds a DMin in Discipleship and Mission from Northern Seminary, and has also served as an overseas missionary and worked to address urban hunger (in Washington, DC). He lives with his wife and four children in Westchester County, New York.
