Nothing is what it seems in the battle to keep a deadly weapon of annihilation away from countless criminal elements who want to unleash it and wipe out the galaxy. Too bad some of these criminal elements are hiding right inside the Confederate Reserve Wing. Sheriff Mace Davenport and his friends get scattered across known space fighting for their lives and battling deadly alien creatures for the fate of the world. The most dangerous enemies are their own people and they're all after Davenport's crew. The problem just got a whole lot more complicated when the crew discovers that the weapon consists of not just one catastrophic element but three of them. The line between friend and enemy continues to blur as the crew hurtles toward the ultimate confrontation that will leave the billions of lives in jeopardy.
The insurrection to take control of the United Space Force is heating up and spreading all over the solar system. The USS Lightning Rod gets caught in the middle of a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse between traitors hidden in the ranks, mutinous crews trying to take control of ships in favor of one side or the other, and both sides want to use Gunnery Sergeant Sailor English as a pawn for their own ends. The forces trying to tear the Force apart infiltrate English's own family. They will pit him against his own son who is acting as a captain for the rebel cause and actively coming out in battle against the Lightning Rod. The situation comes to an explosive head when English gets the crazy idea to leverage his relationships with his own children in favor of the loyalist cause. The aftermath will leave him, his family, and what's left of his life in ruins.
The rebellion that tore the United Space Force can only lead to one inevitable conclusion. Sailor English becomes Captain of the USS Lightning Rod and leads the loyalist force to retake Earth and put down the rebellion once and for all. He'll need every ally he has, but the rebels aren't above using dirty tricks to get what they want. They kidnap English's daughter and hold her as a hostage to try to strong-arm both English and his son Andy into ending the loyalist effort and surrendering to the rebellion. English retaliates with extreme prejudice by rallying the whole loyalist force to conquer Earth and decimate the rebels down to the last ship. No one is prepared for the outcome that will ultimately end the rebellion and bring Earth to its knees. Can the Lightning Rod crew and its sister ships overcome insurmountable odds and save the human race from certain annihilation?
