Suomi pelasti perheen Viron kautta Suomeen maataloustöihin.

Aleksander Wat was, in many ways, the archetypal Central European intellectual of the mid-twentieth century, a man who experienced and influenced all the tumultuous political and artistic movements of his time. Yet, little has been published about him, even in his native Poland. This book is the first account of Wat's turbulent life, accompanied by a thorough analysis of his extraordinary poems and prose works in their diverse periods and genres. Tomas Venclova, himself a poet and literature scholar of international renown, has uncovered numerous new biographical details, made the surprising discovery of an unfinished novel Wat began fifty years ago, and woven together the themes of Wat's life and work. At different times a futurist, surrealist, and communist fellow traveler, Wat turned away from Communism after his imprisonment by the Soviet secret police and became a vociferous spokesman for democracy. Venclova tells Wat's story from his Polish-Jewish upbringing in the early 1900s, his participation in the literary avant-garde in the 1920s, and his work as editor of an influential Communist journal before World War II, through his emigration to the West in 1959 and his death in 1967. Venclova argues convincingly that Wat's literary achievement promoted the rejuvenation of Polish and East European letters after the Stalinist era, and his broad intellectual influence on many, including Czeslaw Milosz, helped to consolidate the moral and political opposition to totalitarian ideology that has profoundly changed political realities in the late twentieth century.

The extraordinary career and impressive literary output of the 'Father' of Polish comedy, Aleksander Fredro, are the subject of much celebration in Poland in 1993, the bicentenary of his birth. These new translations by Noel Clark of three of Fredro's best known plays should do much to repair the relative ignorance of his works in this country. Virgins' Vows - generally regarded as Fredro's most accomplished comedy - and The Annuity, both reflect the author's awareness of the disadvantages suffered by young women in a male-dominated society. Revenge is a seemingly innocent social comedy about a property dispute, but the Russian censors of his day were not slow to spot the subversive potential of the play. Noel Clark's translations of Revenge and Virgins' Vow's have been broadcast, to much acclaim, by the BBC World Service.

At the end of the Second World War, communist sympathies turned Albania from its constitutional traditions into the People’s Socialist Republic of Albania. Enver Hoxha, the leader of the Albanian Labor Party, served as head of state from 1944 until his death in 1985. Under Hoxha and his successor as dictator Ramiz Alia, Albania remained firmly in the Communist bloc and those living in Albania suffered immeasurably. Basic freedoms were stripped away, artistic expression was standardized, and the state imposed harsh rules to create systematic dependence on this authoritarian government. Aleksander Peçi: Albanian Music Before and After the Iron Curtain unveils a critical period of Albanian music history. Under the weight of Communism, Albanian artists used their craft to encourage and empower their fellow citizens. Aleksander Peçi, one of the most well - known of all Albanian composers, set a precedent for artistic freedom through his innovative musical compositions. Peçi's personal twist on Albanian iso-polyphony, creative Carousel structure, and provoking Kabaoisos technique created a sense of newfound imagination in Albanian musicians and listeners. Although Aleksander Peçi is well-known among Eastern European musicians and composers, his innovations are not typically familiar to Western music lovers. The People’s Socialist Republic was dissolved in 1991, yet communist-era restrictions and influences continue to echo in Albanian music. The importance of creating a form for discussing the topic of Communism is paramount to understanding the culture and style of all contemporary European musicians and composers. This book analyzes the life, musical style, and compositions of one of the most important figures of Albanian contemporary classical music.

1960-luvun alussa ilmestyi satukirja, jonka upea kuvitus sai lukijat haltioihinsa. Arvostelijoidenkin adjektiivit tuntuivat loppuvan kesken. Kyseessä oli Yrjö Kokon sadun Pessi ja Illusia lastenpainos. Sen kuvittajaa A. Lindebergiä pidettiin tuolloin melko tuntemattomana taiteilijana. L.M. Montgomerysta sekä fantasian ja fiktion kuvittamisesta. Kalevalan kuvituksia käsittelevä Kultia kujille, hopehia tanhuville ilmestyi Avaimen kustantamana 2015.
