Anna Sirolan kirjasarja vuoden 1918 sisällissodan muistomerkeistä on täydentynyt nyt neljännellä osalla, jossa esitellään noin 350 punaisten puolella surmansa saaneiden muistoksi pystytettyä muistomerkkiä. Pääosa niistä on eteläisessä Suomessa, pohjoisimmat ovat Sallassa ja itäisimmät ovat jääneet nykyisen rajan taakse Venäjän puolelle.Aloitusluvussa luodaan katsaus punaisten hautoihin ja hautauksiin sekä muistomerkkien vaiheisiin. Sitten esitellään viime sotien jälkeen Venäjän puolelle jääneitä punaisten muistopaikkoja.Lopuksi kootaan yhteen punaisten muistomerkkien ominaispiirteitä: mistä materiaalista ne tehtiin, mitä niihin kirjoitettiin ja miten niitä koristeltiin.Pääosan 415 sivun laajuisesta kirjasta muodostaa muistomerkkien tarkastelu paikkakunnittain. Nimitys riippuu siitä, mistä näkökulmasta asiaa tarkastellaan: sisällissota, kansalaissota, luokkasota, kapina vai vapaussota? Tässä kirjassa näkökulma on vapaussota.Sodan muistona sadoille paikkakunnille ympäri Suomea kohosi patsaita ja muistokiviä niin valkoisille, punaisille, ruotsalaisille kuin saksalaisillekin sodassa surmansa saaneille.Näistä muistomerkeistä filosofian maisteri Anna Sirola on kartoittanut kaikki vapaussodan valkoisten sankarihautojen 360 muistomerkkiä, myös luovutetulla alueella Karjalassa ja Kuolajärvellä (Sallassa).Lisäksi kirjassa esitellään yksityishautoihin haudattujen sankarivainajien muistomerkkejä sekä erilliset vapaudenpatsaat. Yhteensä kirjassa on 418 muistomerkkiä.Kirja kertoo muun muassa, ketkä muistomerkkejä puuhasivat ja ketkä niitä tekivät. Vuonna 1918 oli Suomessa noin 13 000 saksalaista sotilasta, jotka osallistuivat kuukauden ajan sisällissotaan hallituksen joukkojen puolella. Sotilaita jäi maahan joulukuuhun 1918 asti. Tänä aikana heistä kuoli eri arvioiden mukaan 350 - 550 sotilasta ja suurin osa heistä haudattiin Suomeen. Suomalaiset pystyttivät saksalaisille muistomerkkejä 35 haudalle sekä kahdelle maihinnousualueelle ja kolmelle taistelupaikalle. Näiden lisäksi pystytettiin vielä kaksi muistomerkkiä merionnettomuuden uhreille. Tämä kirja on ensimmäinen kokonaisesitys saksalaisten muistomerkeistä. Kirjassa kerrotaan muistomerkkien taustaa ja luodaan yleiskatsaus muistomerkkien symboleihin, kuviin ja teksteihin. Jokainen muistomerkki esitellään sekä sanoin että kuvin, monet niistä myös aikalaisteksteillä. Fil.maist., tietokirjailija Anna Sirola on aiemmin julkaissut kaksi kirjaa vuoden 1918 sisällissodan valkoisen puolen sankarihautojen muistomerkeistä: Pohjois-Suomea koskeva Kerro kuolosta patsas vakaa (2014) ja koko maan kattava Vapaussodan sankarihautojen muistomerkkien kirja: Puhukoon paatinen pylväs (2017) . As the wife of a frequently absent slaveholder and public figure, Anna Matilda Page King (1798-1859) was the de facto head of their Sea Island plantation. This volume collects more than 150 letters to her husband, children, parents, and others. Conveying the substance of everyday life as they chronicle King's ongoing struggles to put food on the table, nurse her "family black and white," and keep faith with a disappointing husband, the letters offer an absorbing firsthand account of antebellum coastal Georgia life.Anna Matilda Page was reared with the expectation that she would marry a planter, have children, and tend to her family's domestic affairs. Untypically, she was also schooled by her father in all aspects of plantation management, from seed cultivation to building construction. That grounding would serve her well. By 1842 her husband's properties were seized, owing to debts amassed from crop failures, economic downturns, and extensive investments in land, enslaved workers, and the development of the nearby port town of Brunswick. Anna and her family were sustained, however, by Retreat, the St. Simons Island property left to her in trust by her father. With the labor of fifty bondpeople and "their increase" she was to strive, with little aid from her husband, to keep the plantation solvent.A valuable record of King's many roles, from accountant to mother, from doctor to horticulturist, the letters also reveal much about her relationship with, and attitudes toward, her enslaved workers. Historians have yet to fully understand the lives of plantation mistresses left on their own by husbands pursuing political and other professional careers. Anna Matilda Page King's letters give us insight into one such woman who reluctantly entered, but nonetheless excelled in, the male domains of business and agriculture.
