"The series pulls the reader immediately into the complex and colorful world of Venice at the zenith of its power ... This is a delightful series." - Historical Novel Society Book ReviewMarriage matches were not preordained by God in heaven for the Venetian nobility; they were skillfully negotiated by fathers looking to enhance their prestige and wealth.Mauritius Baric would have been such a desirable match. As heir to a Venetian barony, Mauro had connections to powerful political allies that would please a future father-in-law. As a bonus to the potential bride, he was young and handsome. Mauro did have some quirks, perhaps due to his mother's neglect, his lingering guilt over his brother's accident, or his father ruining Mauro's wish to die a hero's death on a battlefield.Mauro's father ruined many aspects of his life, including deciding on his future bride. Terese Kokkinos-Resi, as her family called her-was the daughter of an Ottoman sea trader, not a Venetian lady, and definitely not someone interested in marrying an aristocrat. Betrothed as children to repay her father's debt to the Barics, their paired future together was the keystone to the House of Baric's continued success.Mauro happily kept his betrothed waiting in Thessaloniki while he soldiered in his uncle's army. Resi made the best of her sequestered adolescence at home. Since her future had already been decided, she didn't need to learn the skills other girls focused on to entice a husband. Instead, Resi used her idle time to read every book she could find. That is until tragedy struck the House of Baric, and their summons arrived on her doorstep. In the summer of 1649, the Thirty Years' War was winding down, and Mauro and his small army could spend their days at Baric Castle again.Although a year had passed since Mauro and Resi's marriage, the newlyweds barely knew each other. Her strong will and his stoic nature had made for an awkward courtship at first. With time, though, Mauro could no longer deny that this complicated woman might be his perfect match. Love will bloom, and not just between the Barics. Friends and unexpected visitors will bring trouble to the House of Baric and romantic opportunities for the soldiers and servants who kept the castle running. With humor and drama, you are a fly on the wall in this intriguing and adventurous world. Love, war, hating, and mating were not so different back then. These memorable characters only wanted to steer their destinies in search of a happily ever after, and you will find yourself rooting for them to succeed in their quest.
". . . The conflicts, intrigues, and romances among the cast of characters intensify, and readers who have come this far should not only be compelled to read through to the end, but be eagerly awaiting the final installment." - Kirkus Reviews"The action and exotic settings of the novels are richly atmospheric; Venice itself becomes almost another character. This is a delightful series, and I finished the second book eager to read the third." - Historical Novel Society Book ReviewYou've met the colorful characters of the House of Baric in Part One: Shields Down, witnessed their loyal bonds of friendship, watched their willing romances and wondered what other secrets would be revealed. In book two of this entertaining tale set in the 17th-century Venetian Empire, the story picks up where the first book left off: the mercenaries are waiting for Mauro and Resi at Baric Castle. The reunion doesn't go well. Mauro's new brother-in-law's arrival stirs up trouble, while the elegant Venetian guests at Baric Castle add to the drama. Still, Mauro's worries mount for other reasons, and his past pain can no longer stay buried. In Part Two: A Brother's Defense, he must face his demons. Set in the summer of 1649, this gripping saga of revenge, redemption, and romance does not disappoint. Swords will be drawn in A Brother's Defense when Mauro solves the mystery. Questions from Shields Down will be answered, and more will come to light as this engaging trilogy speeds along.
"And in the end, this trilogy is a grand drama. The conflicts, intrigues, and romances among the cast of characters intensify, and readers who have come this far should not only be compelled to read through to the end, but be eagerly awaiting the final installment." - Kirkus ReviewThe House of Baric is celebrating Near tragedy turned to triumph at the end of Part Two: A Brother's Defense, and Mauro and Resi couldn't be happier. Jero and Ruby decided to tempt fate and left for Thessaloniki to seal their love. The mercenaries have one last piece of unfinished business in Ottoman lands before they settle down to spend their hard-won gold.No news has arrived in Solgrad from Fabian, his sister Caterina, or Isabella on their arranged futures. But the Barics will soon set sail for Venice, and there will be plenty of time to catch up with the Carreras at Stephan's long-awaited wedding. The spotlight is on the women** in Part Three: Widows and Weddings, and the Barics' tale comes full circle. Circles are not always smooth, and it will be jarring for our friends when their happily ever after fades like a sunset over the Adriatic.Enter the House of Baric for one last visit. Share their joy, feel their grief, and find out how their grand drama ends.** This story is fictional but contains real-life elements. Sexual situations, abuse, misogyny, and themes of rape and abortion might trigger some readers.
