Expanding the scope of religious rhetoric/B> Over the past twenty-five years, the intersection of rhetoric and religion has become one of the most dynamic areas of inquiry in rhetoric and writing studies. One of few volumes to include multiple traditions in one conversation, Rhetoric and Religion in the Twenty-First Century engages with religious discourses and issues that continue to shape public life in the United States. This collection of essays centralizes the study of religious persuasion and pluralism, considers religion’s place in U.S. society, and expands the study of rhetoric and religion in generative ways. The volume showcases a wide range of religious traditions and challenges the very concepts of rhetoric and religion. The book’s eight essays explore African American, Buddhist, Christian, Indigenous, Islamic, and Jewish rhetoric and discuss the intersection of religion with feminism, race, and queer rhetoric—along with offering reflections on how to approach religious traditions through research and teaching. In addition, the volume includes seven short interludes in which some of the field’s most accomplished scholars recount their experiences engaging with religious rhetorics and invite readers to engage these exigent lines of inquiry. By featuring these diverse religious perspectives, Rhetoric and Religion in the Twenty-First Century complicates the field’s emphasis on Western, Hellenistic, and Christian ideologies. The collection also offers teachers of writing and rhetoric a range of valuable approaches for preparing today’s students for public citizenship in our religiously diverse global context.

A play in book form entitled The King in Yellow A mysterious and malevolent supernatural entity known as the King in Yellow An eerie symbol called the Yellow Sign These stories are macabre in tone, centering, in keeping with the other tales, on characters that are often artists or decadents, inhabitants of the demi-monde. The first and fourth stories, "The Repairer of Reputations" and "The Yellow Sign", are set in an imagined future 1920s America, whereas the second and third stories, "The Mask" and "In the Court of the Dragon", are set in Paris. These stories are haunted by the theme: "Have you found the Yellow Sign?" The weird and macabre character gradually fades away during the remaining stories, and the last three are written in the romantic fiction style common to Chambers' later work. They are all linked to the preceding stories by their Parisian setting and their artistic protagonists.

To millions of people in the world, rice is the center of existence, especially in Asia, where more than 90 percent of the world's rice is grown. This book is about the trends and changes that have occurred in the Asian rice economy since World War II, but particularly since the introduction of new varieties of rice and modern technology in the mid-1960s. Although there is now a vast amount of literature and statistical data on various aspects of the subject, no single comprehensive treatment has previously been prepared. The Rice Economy of Asia not only provides such a treatment but also presents a clear picture of some of the critical issues dealing with productivity and equity --- as a glance at the table of contents will show. In addition to 18 chapters, there are an extensive bibilography, 150 tables, and 50 charts. The volume, as a whole, should be interesting and useful to decisionmakers at national and international levels, to professionals, and to students of development.

This is the first book-length study of female adolescence in the French novel of this period. It analyzes representations of the "world apart" of female adolescence in selected novels from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the nineteenth century, several factors contributed to the shaping of a new social category for young women, which then gained increasing attention from writers. Art and life echoed one another, as novels about female adolescents created a social stir, and incited further discussion about the proper role for young women in French society. In this book, the author considers key novels of female adolescence from the period as a means of understanding the concerns and desires they embody. Examining these novels thematically and chronologically, Dr. Gale traces shifting social values and sexual roles and examines the ways in which various artistic, intellectual, or literary influences of each period shape its portraits of female adolescence. Novelists create their young female characters as French society undergoes parallel transformation. In this sense, female adolescents represent, for the novelists, the possible futures of France.

While on a dangerous sweep through Chinatown, Paul, a San Francisco cop, flashes back to his days in Vietnam after a bullet rings against the tattered brick walls of a known gang hideout. The sound of choppers is deafening while men are screaming death's agony. Fresh blood trickles slowly across the sidewalk and an innocent girl's life fades from reality. Three thousand miles away Paul's soulmate Victoria has the feeling that something has gone terribly wrong and waits nervously by her computer for word that he is safe. Tears fall silently down Victoria's cheeks because the man she loves never logs-on and her stomach cringes with fear. Based on real life people, From Metal to Flesh is a novel about Paul San Felize, a 48-year-old SWAT Team lieutenant, who wears life's challenges like a suit of armor. After a heartbreaking childhood dominated by an abusive mother, Paul escapes the street-life of a gang member to join the military. As the Vietnam conflict begins to escalate, this determined, strong-willed man trains to become a covert warrior in the most elite branch of all Special Forces - a Navy SEAL. When tragedy strikes, Paul finds himself in a life-long battle with his memories and the one thing he wants most in his life but cannot find. Several years after Vietnam, Paul uses his computer interests to help his SWAT Team track and arrest street criminals. But what he doesn't know is that this same piece of equipment will eventually provide the answer to his search and unlock the demons he thought had been buried forever. Growing up on a farm, Victoria Walker found the meaning of life through strong morals and deeply embedded values. Stemming from hard work and the love and support of her family, Victoria established deep roots in the tradition of a Southern culture. As graceful as hoop skirts, yet as hard as the baked clay beneath her feet, this 38-year-old woman has her faith, courage, and strength tested many times. From a devastating riding accident, to the confines of an abusive husband, Victoria is now divorced, alone, and struggling to find at least one thing that would make her happy. Victoria suddenly finds a whole New World at the end of her fingertips in computers while attending college night classes. Living a quiet life, trying to recover from several disastrous years, this gentle but fiercely independent woman turns to the Internet for friends and a place to which she can escape the daily pain of life. Oblivious to where Fate was leading her, Victoria accidentally meets Paul on the computer and soon realizes that life for them both will never be the same again. Deep in the jungles of Vietnam the sound of choppers are faint in the distance yet growing with every heartbeat. "They're coming Chew... They'll be here any minute buddy... that's it... just hang on... just hang on...." Paul let out a blood-curdling scream..."Noooooooo...." then collapsed in a heap on the dark, City Street. Fog from the Bay enveloped him, but in his mind, Paul could only remember the steam that rose from that dreadful jungle floor. A constant struggle to keep reality and memories separate plagues the main character throughout his life until one day a soft southern woman walks into his world and changes everything. From Metal to Flesh unravels the intrigue and mystery Victoria holds for Paul, while day-by-day they both come to realize how important they are to each other. Just as it seems their lives will become one, this 129,209 word novel allows Paul's history to come back to haunt him once again. Victoria's struggle to save her own life, while trying to bring Paul back From Metal to Flesh, is just a breath away from reality. Within these pages, From Metal to Flesh tells the real-life story in novel form of a love affair destined to last an eternity and haunt both characters for the rest of their lives.

In presenting sociological research on the way people dress, this text helps students develop an appreciation for the value of research skills in their academic and professional careers. What more exciting topic to study and research than dress and society! And what more engaging way to present this topic than with current research that analyzes dress as an individual social behavior controlled by factors that students can relate to their own lives and their own way of dressing. Concepts such as gender, religion, race, and education and the cultural norms promoted by each of these factors are thoroughly discussed in terms of dress. So too are violations of these norms and the consequences of the violations for the individual and society. For each concept, recent and classic research demonstrates its practical application. A host of pedagogical features make the academically rigorous content enjoyable and memorable for the students. Each chapter opens with an example from the headlines of the popular press followed by chapter objectives. Chapters conclude with a summary, a list of key terms, discussion questions, suggested readings, and references, all of which help students retain and think about what they have learned. Features -- Newspaper and magazine articles as opening vignettes for each chapter -- Discussion questions help students think about what they have lerned -- Instructor's Guide on CD-ROM providing a test bank, Internet research activities, and presentation notes in PowerPoint format

The University Museum excavated at Beth Shan from 1921-1934, when stratigraphical methods were first being developed. For this study the two Late Bronze levels (VII and VIII) have been reevaluated by the careful analysis of field records, photographs, and drawings along with the restudy of all artifacts housed in The University Museum and a selection of objects in the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem. The structures of these levels have parallels in New Kingdom Egypt and Late Bronze/Early Iron Age sites of southern Levant and the Sinai. Included are contributions by 13 specialists on specific classes of objects and technologies.
Grade A Papers (Paperback in B&W)
Grade A Papers is a collection of funny, refreshingly original fake student papers and is rich with art. This book pokes friendly fun at the random eccentricities & idiosyncrasies of college teachers, students, politicians and celebrities. The book began as a practical joke & turned into an enterprise. Michael Feldman of the "Whad'ya Know" show calls it "Quite an amazing stylist in this...and funny!" Cartoonist Joe Martin of The Washington Post's "Mr. Boffo" & "Willy n' Ethel" acclaim says: "I hold the Guinness Record for writing 40,000 jokes. Schaefer has put more than that in one book and I think she may have more funny ones." This coffee table book contains 30 wacky, whimsical faux student papers; the celebrity/political parody "The Nutty Years of Jon Stewart Presidency in a Nutshell"; 4 composition theorists parodies & 30+ custom-made designs by artists across the world.
