Since his award-winning debut collection of stories, Last Days of the Dog- Men, Brad Watson has been expanding the literary traditions of the South, in work as melancholy, witty, strange, and lovely as any in America. Inspired by the true story of his own great-aunt, he explores the life of Miss Jane Chisolm, born in rural, early-twentieth-century Mississippi with a genital birth defect that would stand in the way of the central "uses" for a woman in that time and place-namely, sex and marriage. From the country doctor who adopts Jane to the hard tactile labor of farm life, from the highly erotic world of nature around her to the boy who loved but was forced to leave her, the world of Miss Jane Chisolm is anything but barren. Free to satisfy only herself, she mesmerizes those around her, exerting an unearthly fascination that lives beyond her still.

Winner of the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award In prose so precise and beautiful it makes a reader's hair stand on end, Brad Watson writes about people and dogs: dogs as companions, as accomplices, and as unwitting victims of human passions; and people responding to dogs as missing parts of themselves. In each of these stories he captures the animal crannies of the human personality -- yearning for freedom, mourning the loss of something wild, drawn to human connection but also to thoughtless abandon and savagery without judgment. Ultimately, however, people are responsible where dogs are not: "I'm told in medieval times," the narrator of the title story tells us, "animals were regularly put on trial, with witnesses and testimony and so forth. But it is relatively rare today." Funny, dark, sometimes brutal, and stunning in their perfection of expression, Watson's stories herald the arrival of a true talent.

In this, his first collection of stories since his celebrated, award-winning Last Days of the Dog-Men, Brad Watson takes us even deeper into the riotous, appalling, and mournful oddity of human beings. In prose so perfectly pitched as to suggest some celestial harmony, he writes about every kind of domestic discord: unruly or distant children, alienated spouses, domestic abuse, loneliness, death, divorce. In his masterful title novella, a freshly married teenaged couple are visited by an unusual pair of inmates from a nearby insane asylum—and find out exactly how mismatched they really are. With exquisite tenderness, Watson relates the brutality of both nature and human nature. There’s no question about it. Brad Watson writes so well—with such an all-seeing, six-dimensional view of human hopes, inadequacies, and rare grace—that he must be an extraterrestrial.

“Here is a generous portion of the work of a swiftly passing lifetime. Bountiful is the deserving page,” Joy Williams writes in her introduction to this astonishing selection of Brad Watson’s published and unpublished stories: “excellent, assured, funny, startling, heartbreaking, wild", full of “freakish flair” and “melancholy realism”—stories that give us a “glimpse” of ourselves “so surprising, so varied yet unequivocal, so ruthlessly complete, that it does awaken us in some manner, if not protect or prepare us.” Brad Watson was a master of dark comedy, extraordinary lyricism, appalling grotesquerie and unabashed vulnerability; a sublime prose stylist whose novels and stories drew upon the fecundity and moodiness of the South. Male meltdown, carrying with it the possibility of being saved by Dolly Parton or some other woman or maybe by animal friends, is a theme, as is young love and its disillusionment, as are strange neighbours who cannot be understood. A leopard that consumes its zookeeper, pronghorn antelope tenderly transporting the poop of their young, insufferably articulate birds and restless, tolerant dogs—this is also eco-fiction of a very peculiar sort, in which nature reassures, transcends and finally escapes judging or being judged by us. Roller-coastering from the mournful to the comical (sometimes in the same paragraph), Watson’s work is both embedded in a literary heritage tied to place and at home in a universal literature of the absurd. His stories waltz with lovely and strange melancholy, infused with wit and astonishing beauty. There Is Happiness embodies the twisted hilarity and undeniable grace of an under-recognised literary genius.

At its core, discipleship is a multifaceted, communal, and holistic process as the gospel transforms our head, heart, and hands. Part of discipleship is growing in our understanding of the gospel with others-God calls us to Discover who he is, what he has done, who we are, and how we live as we read the Bible. Secondly, we're called into relationships that Nurture the ongoing journey of repentance and faith. Lastly, Christ calls us to listen to Act as we grow in obedience. D-N-A groups are intentional on walking through this process of Discover, Nurture, and Act with other men and women.Growing in Christ Together is a sixteen week curriculum designed to help groups of men and women initiate this life-long process of discipleship. You will focus on the essentials of following Jesus through reading, conversation, community, and obedience. Be prepared: this is more than a Bible study you attend. Growing in Christ Together will invite you to grow as a disciple and help others grow, too.

Did Jesus really beat death? That’s what Christians for hundreds of years have believed, that Jesus Christ returned to life after death and burial in a stone tomb. To the modern mind, “resurrection” is utterly implausible, but it was also doubtful to many first-century Greeks, Jews, and even some Christians. With such an incredible assertion at the heart of the Christian faith, it’s no wonder that some people struggle to believe. Unlike any other book on the resurrection, Raised? encourages you to doubt in order to believe. Too often Christians look down on doubt, but in Christ, we see a person who welcomes doubt and encourages faith. Jonathan Dodson and Brad Watson don’t shy away from the hard questions or settle for easy answers. They help you to see how the resurrection offers hope for the future and answers for the life and death questions we all face. “I encourage Christians and non-Christians alike to read this book. . . . provocative, illuminating, and succinct.”—Eileen Flynn, former religion reporter for Austin American-Statesman and Journalism and religion lecturer at the University of Texas “Wonderfully demonstrates the plausibility of the resurrection of Jesus and the possibilities for a life of hope.”—Sean McDonough, professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and author of Christ as Creator: Origins of a New Testament Doctrine

Dwarfsploitation is an entertaining and educational look into the world of dwarf cinema. From Freaks to Willow, Dwarfsploitaton analyzes a wide variety of both independent and mainstream films, chronicling the number of ways in which little people are exploited. It is a must have for any fan of little people or film itself. "Dwarfish reviews about dwarf films seems an odd basis for a book, but it's surprisingly entertaining and enlightening and respectful about the little folk. A snappy, unique guide to all films Dwarf." - Joe R. Lansdale, author of Bubba Ho-Tep "This book is truly a one-of-a-kind. An inspired idea, and an equally-inspired book. Chris Watson and Brad Paulson have created something special with "Dwarfsploitation." In an age when there seems to be books about every aspect of cinema, these authors have discovered a niche that had yet to be explored. Kudos." - Andrew J. Rausch, author of Turning Points in Film History "The first time I went to the Library of Congress to do research on midgets in film, I was directed to a single tattered volume produced by the MGM publicist on "The Wizard of Oz." I was astounded. The literature was virtually non-existent. Later I had a special assignment involving dwarf-tossing, and I sought out any dwarf-tossing trade association that could possibly be of any assistance. Again, my exertions were frustrated. That's why, when I first heard that "Dwarfsploitation" was in the works, I was cautiously hopeful but still ready for a Billy Barty headbutt to the nuts. I'm happy to say that the resulting book is a resource that we've needed for 60 years, and should take up permanent residence on the Ikea children's-room book shelves of anyone shorter than 4-foot-4." - Joe Bob Briggs, author of Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In "Brad and Chris's book stands head and shoulders above the run of the mill cinema book types. It makes little people everywhere stand a little." - James Bryan, director of Don't Go in the Woods "Paulson and Watson's book is a unique perspective to say the least. We seem to have books on everything these days, so, why not something that is entertaining, informative and celebrates our little friends in cinema." - Robert Davi, actor from License to Kill "It was a short read and I loved it. Don't overlook it " - Joe Estevez, actor from Soultaker "Wow, I'm impressed This has to be the most comprehensive guide to cinematic dwarves that you'll ever read. Meticulously researched, with hysterically funny yet genuinely fond comments by the authors, running the gamut from dwarfsploitation to 'normal' life. A must-have for any film-fan's library." - scream queen Brinke Stevens "A salute to Little People everywhere that belongs on every film aficionado's desk . Horror film makers: A demented dwarf is icing on the cake. I am working one into my next film. I'm the man that discovered both Luis Dejesus and Herve and can say without fear of contradiction what they lacked in height they made up in talent and length." - Joel M. Reed, director of Bloodsucking Freaks"Celebrating the little guy, in an easygoing manner that's both affectionate and amusing." - bookgasm.com

Responsibly led boards of directors make it possible for modern companies to survive and prosper under conditions of change. Despite the importance of boards of directors, their activities are often lionised or vilified by shareholders and stakeholders which obscures how boards enact responsible leadership. Responsible Leadership in Corporate Governance: An Integrative Approach introduces an integrative model of responsible leadership in governance that positions the board as a nexus of all corporate participants. In this model, responsibly led boards seek to make decisions in the best interests of the modern company as an entity that operates in a dynamic business environment. This book provides a timely focus on in-depth cases of board led responsible leadership. Examining boards of directors in listed companies, state-owned enterprises, and private companies, the book connects insights from corporate governance and leadership to behaviours that affect boards’ relationships with shareholders and stakeholders. In addition, these insights underscore key requirements and challenges of responsible leadership in governance: from the importance of purpose and the crucial role of value creation to the difficulties of ownership transition and accountability. Far-sighted and experienced-based, this book will not only help students connect to real world situations but also will benefit those that interact with and support boards of directors.

This Element deals with leadership and governance of corporations from the point of view of the board. We expand our understanding of board leadership by focusing on the modern company as a legal person comprised of a capital fund and the relationships among directors, shareholders, management and stakeholders. We propose a model which integrates insights from the fields of leadership and corporate governance and establishes a theoretical link illustrated by empirical findings in three intersections: team leadership on the board, the chair's leadership of the board, and strategic leadership by the board. We maintain this integrative model provides a powerful means to further an understanding of the board as the nexus of leadership and governance. We close this Element by identifying the new research directions that our integrative model opens up. We also identify the implications for practice for those who either serve on boards or provide support to them.
