Es considerado como el iniciador de la novela nacional de su pa s, tom parte activa en la pol tica y sufri varios destierros.Su cuento El primer suplicio est ambientado en su experiencia en la Revoluci n de las Lanzas. Reconstruy los a os de la lucha por la independencia frente a Espa a y Brasil, as como las primeras guerras civiles (1808-1825), en la tetralog a formada por las novelas Ismael (1888), Nativa (1890), Grito de gloria (1893) y Lanza y sable (1914), con intenci n de indagar en la formaci n de la conciencia nacional.
