Each chapter in this book deals with a single mathematical topic, which ideally should form the basis of a single lecture. The chapter has been designed as a mixture of the following ingredients: -(i) Illustrative examples and notes for the student's pre-lecture reading. (ii) Class discussion exercises for study in a lecture or seminar. (iii) Graded problems for assignment work. Contents 1 Sets, functions page 11 2 Limits and continuity 17 3 The exponential and related functions 25 4 Inverse functions 30 5 Differentiation 35 6 Differentiation of implicit functions 44 7 Maxima and minima 50 8 Curve sketching 54 9 Expansion in series 61 10 Newton's method 67 11 Area and integration 72 12 Standard integrals 80 13 Applications of the fundamental theorem 87 14 Substitution in integrals 94 15 Use of partial fractions 100 16 Integration by parts 106 Answers to problems 110 Index 116 1 Sets, Functions A set is a collection of distinct objects. The objects be longing to a set are the elements (or members) of the set. Although the definition of a set given here refers to objects, we shall in fact take objects to be numbers throughout this book, i.e. we are concerned with sets of numbers. Illustrative Example 1: Set Notation We give straight away some examples of sets in set notation and explain the meaning in each case.
A campus stabbing that is not what it seems ...When a gifted, handsome Armidale University student is mysteriously stabbed from behind, detectives have almost no clues and no obvious motive. DI Emily Sanderson - calm, controlled and polite - leads a small team of police assembled to solve the case. Tedious investigative police work, the results of various forensic tests, and a little luck, eventually lead to the identification and punishment of the attacker. As the investigation proceeds, the lives of a number of the people associated with the crime - even some of the police - are changed dramatically. At the climax, a number of other, hitherto unresolved cases are finalised. Justice is eventually achieved, and in an epilogue, we learn what subsequently happened in the lives of the major participants.

When thirteen-year-old orphan Penny Sinclair moves to the small town of Dogwood to live with her godmother, she expects her life to become very dull. She doesn't expect to find a strange talking fox roaming the countryside near her new home, a kindred spirit in her new friend Zoe, or the secret grove where they discover the long hidden magic of The Phoenix Girls. Learning to use magic isn't easy, though; Penny and Zoe get their magic wrong almost as often as they get it right. When something sinister threatens Dogwood, their often accidental magic may be the only thing that can stop it.
In this explosive conclusion to The Phoenix Girls Trilogy, the girls and their expanding circle of friends prepare to defend Aurora Hollow and Dogwood against enemies from another world, and Penny faces the greatest challenge of her young life; the truth about her father, her family's darkest secrets, and the mystery of the Phoenix. Trouble has come to Aurora Hollow again, and this time the whole world is in danger.

SQL Server 2008 represents a sizable jump forward in scalability, performance, and usability for the DBA, developer, and business intelligence (BI) developer. It is no longer unheard of to have 20-terabyte databases running on a SQL Server. SQL Server administration used to just be the job of a database administrator (DBA), but as SQL Server proliferates throughout smaller companies, many developers have begun to act as administrators as well. Additionally, some of the new features in SQL Server are more developer-centric, and poor configuration of these features can result in poor performance. SQL Server now enables you to manage the policies on hundreds of SQL Servers in your environment as if you were managing a single instance. We've provided a comprehensive, tutorial-based book to get you over the learning curve of how to configure and administer SQL Server 2008. Whether you're an administrator or developer using SQL Server, you can't avoid wearing a DBA hat at some point. Developers often have SQL Server on their own workstations and must provide guidance to the administrator about how they'd like the production configured. Oftentimes, they're responsible for creating the database tables and indexes. Administrators or DBAs support the production servers and often inherit the database from the developer. This book is intended for developers, DBAs, and casual users who hope to administer or may already be administering a SQL Server 2008 system and its business intelligence features, such as Integration Services. This book is a professional book, meaning the authors assume that you know the basics about how to query a SQL Server and have some rudimentary concepts of SQL Server already. For example, this book does not show you how to create a database or walk you through the installation of SQL Server using the wizard. Instead, the author of the installation chapter may provide insight into how to use some of the more advanced concepts of the installation. Although this book does not cover how to query a SQL Server database, it does cover how to tune the queries you've already written.
