This dark comedy takes place in a seedy motel room outside Oklahoma City, where Agnes, a drug-addled cocktail waitress, is hiding from her ex-con ex-husband. Her lesbian biker friend R.C. introduces her to Peter, a handsome drifter who might be an AWOL Gulf War veteran. They soon begin a relationship that takes place almost entirely within the increasingly claustrophobic confines of her motel room. Peter begins to rant about the war in Iraq, UFOs, the Oklahoma City bombings, cult suicides, and then secret government experiments on soldiers, of which he believes he is a victim. His delusions infect Agnes and the tension mounts as mysterious strangers appear at their door, past events haunt them at every turn, and they are attacked by real bugs. Tracy Letts's tale of love, paranoia, and government conspiracy is a thought-provoking psycho-thriller that mixes terror and laughter at a fever pitch.

My name's Tobi Jackson, but most people call me Bug. This is my story told through my eyes and heart. It is straightforward. You will sense you are there with me. I was born in June and got my name Bug because my Momma used to call me her little June Bug.You know, in June, there are the Fireflies that fly in the night and glow with a light then go dark - off and on. That has been my life for as long as I can remember, like the Firefly -Light and Dark, but mostly dark until that day. The Darkness began when my Momma's "J's" took advantage of me in my youth and continued until Momma died. I became homeless on the streets at the age of 14 and began my own life of the "J's". The darkness was only briefly relieved by a false sense of light supplied by the momentary euphoria from the use of dirt. That and my friendship with Chloe, my street sister. Though diverse in personality, we found kinship and friendship living with the darkness and sharing those false moments of light brought on by dirt. Then came a chance encounter that unbeknownst to me would begin contact with another "J", but one of Light, not darkness. Though I shunned it at first, a dramatic tragedy occurred that flattened me. My struggles with the dark aftermath and the false light eventually lead me to another encounter with the "J" of Light.Your heart and mind will be captured as you immerse yourself into the story of Bug.

Christopher Jon Heuer

"What you have in your hands is a bomb. But it is the kind you need to hold on to for dear life, not run away from."--From the Foreword, John Lee Clark Christopher Jon Heuer lost his hearing early, but not before "being able to hear a lot as a kid." He also received a good education, both in a speech-oriented setting and a signing environment. These varied experiences provided him with the perfect background to write about biases he faced, not only those of a mostly oblivious hearing society, but also those of ideologically restrictive members of the Deaf community. BUG: Deaf Identity and Internal Revolution combines new work of Heuer's with his best columns from The Tactile Mind Weekly and the National Association of the Deaf's Mind Over Matter. He addresses all topics - exit interviews, baldness, faith healing, marriage, cats, Christmas trips, backyard campfires in boxer shorts - with a withering wit that spares no aspect of life and deafness. Being "bugged" for Heuer began early: "When I was growing up, my mother's response to every problem I had was: 'Well, he just needs to adjust to his deafness.' Bloody nose? 'Chris, you need to adjust to your deafness.' Homework not done? 'I know it's hard adjusting to your deafness, honey, but ....' Acne scarring? 'Lots of teenagers get zits, Chris. I know it's hard for you, dealing with this while trying to adjust to your ....'" He rebelled then, and continues through his even-handed irreverence in BUG, a bomb that should go off in everyone's consciousness about being deaf and Deaf.

Giacomo Sartori

Finalist for the 2022 Philip K. Dick AwardWith the wicked humor and imagination that made readers fall in love with his novel I Am God, Giacomo Sartori brings us a madcap story of family dysfunction, (dis)ability, intelligent robots, bees, and a family of misfit savants living outside the bounds. In the singular world of the young, deaf narrator of Bug, there are just a handful of people who try to understand him when he gets into trouble at school. His father, a data analyst for Nutella whose real job is to pinpoint terrorists, is clueless about humans in real life. His brilliant brother, called IQ in public and Robin Hood in the hackersphere, has his back but is ever busier training his robot. His grandfather, a retired anarchist-guerilla-turned-nematologist, chides him for misbehaving when he takes him hunting for worms. Meanwhile, his Buddhist beekeeper mother, ordinarily his closest confidante, has been in a coma ever since a terrible car accident.Just when the family’s survival in their converted chicken coop seems most precarious, someone—or something—new enters his life: Bug. This self-declared "fast friend" seems to know all about his family and has some creative, if not strictly legal, ideas about how to help....
