Richard Wright died 50 years ago and in that time there has been little research on the role of women in his powerful novels of African-American life in America. This research monograph fulfills that informational and interpretative need. It is an analysis of Wright's seemingly thin and shadowy use of female characters and a reinterpretation of those characters as symbolical instruments in the development of Wright's chief male characters as they struggle as “boy-men” in the profoundly racist America of the early and mid 20th century America.
Originally published in 1946, this book presents the content of Eliza Marian Butler's inaugural lecture upon taking up the position of Schröder Professor of German at Cambridge University. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in German poetry and literary criticism.
Originally published in 1935, this book provides a study of the powerful influence exercised by Ancient Greek culture on German writers from the eighteenth century onwards. The text takes as its starting point Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–68), who was of fundamental importance to the introduction of Hellenistic ideas within the German intellectual tradition. This is followed by a chronological discussion of other key figures, such as Goethe, Schiller and Heine, revealing the complicated relationship between these ideas and the expression of an explicitly Germanic identity. A detailed index and bibliography are also included, together with illustrative figures. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in German literature, Ancient Greece and literary criticism.

Feminist Groupwork explores the purposes, practice and effectiveness of groupwork with women, drawing upon the authors' own involvement in setting up and running community-based women's groups. The book offers clear accounts of the structured content of group sessions and the definitions and measurements of change developed by participants. It makes a convincing case for adopting a feminist approach with women who are isolated in their own communities and who bear the brunt of socio-political disadvantage. Central to the book is the focus on women's understandings of themselves and their experiences, and how groupwork can lead to potentially liberating interpretations with profound consequences for participants' lives. Women are encouraged to recognize their resilience, survival skills and strengths. Feminist Groupwork was awarded a 1992 Distinguished Publication Award by the Association for Women in Psychology, USA.
Employing interpretive strategies from semiotics, narratology, feminist theory, and ideological analysis, Elliott Butler-Evans explores the manner in which the politics of race and gender overdetermine the narrative structures of the fiction of Toni Cade Bambara, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker. He argues that their writing is "often the site of dissonance, ruptures, and...a kind of narrative violence generated by...these two distinctly different, and often contending, expressions of desire." For novelists such as those considered, the identification "black women writers" suggests the ideological duality that both limits and expands the meanings within their literature. After locating the nationalist, black aesthetic, and black feminist discourses in the writings of Morrison, Bambara, and Walker, Butler-Evans argues for a problematic tension between the racial and gender ideologies in the authors' fictions of the 1970s. In a concluding chapter, he demonstrates how the writers' use of post-modern narrative strategies enables them to figure a black feminist ideological position in their fictions of the 1980s. Author note: Elliott Butler-Evans is Associate Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
