Tombstone Inscriptions - Orange and Alamance Counties - N.C.
Durward T. Stokes of Alamance Co. surveyed a number of abandoned or lost cemeteries - primarily in Alamance County, but moved around crossing into Orange, Chatham, and Randolph Counties. His manuscript was typed in 1979, but never published. His actual surveys occurred in 1958-9. This was fortunate, since a number of these locations are gone - and the old tombstones are not getting better (visually) with age. Therefore, I as editor, retyped his manuscript - and added historical remarks (where helpful), pictures I took in modern times, and a detailed index. Durward had some B&W pictures - which are included in this book as well.Lastly, there are two graveyards that I found, that Durward was not aware of - included with pictures and maps in an Appendix.

'Quite the best detailed story of that great battle I have ever read ... a superb book' Field Marshal Montgomery The perfect book for those who enjoy the work of James Holland, Ian W. Toll and Anthony Beevor. The Second Battle of El Alamein was a crucial turning point in the Second World War. In the words of Winston Churchill: 'It may almost be said: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat".' How had Bernard Montgomery and the Eighth Army been able to turn back the might of Rommel's Axis forces? Alamein uncovers the actions of Allied and Axis forces before and during the ferocious battle in vivid detail. It explains who the commanders were, what forces they had, how they were arranged and what strategies were used by both sides to try to defeat their enemies. C. E. Lucas Phillips fought in the battle as a commander of one of Montgomery's regiments. Yet, his account is not simply that of an eyewitness, instead, using a variety of personal and official sources, he provides a thorough overview of the conflict. 'Absorbing and inspiring' Daily Telegraph 'He has drawn upon a considerable body of personal diaries, letters, narratives and interviews from which come significant details.' Army Magazine 'A crisply written account of the action that turned the tide of war in North Africa in 1942.' Military Review 'this is an excellent and possibly definitive work.' Kirkus Reviews

"A comprehensive and vivid account of the heroic defense of Bastogne... McManus has taken a great old story and made it new again."--Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author of An Army at Dawn During the Battle of the Bulge, the 101st Airborne made their legendary stand at Bastogne. But their heroics never could have happened if not for the unsung efforts of others. This is the powerful yet little-known story of the bloody delaying action fought by the 28th Infantry Division, elements of the 9th and 10th Armored Divisions, and other, smaller units. Outnumbered and outgunned, they made the Germans pay for every icy inch of ground they gained. It was their gallant efforts that allowed the 101st Airborne to reach and fully occupy Bastogne and prepare for the ferocious attack to come. Featuring numerous helpful maps and a complete list of the soldiers, local civilians, and German commanders whose actions it recounts, Alamo in the Ardennes provides a compelling, day-by-day account of this pivotal moment in America's greatest war.

At last, the full story of the turning point in the Battle of the Bulge In December 1944, the Belgian town of Bastogne was a key objective of the Germans’ surprise offensive in the Ardennes–and they had to take it quickly. For five crucial days, small groups of American soldiers from the 28th, 9th Armored, 10th Armored, and 101st Airborne Divisions, some outnumbered ten to one, slowed the German advance and allowed Bastogne to be reinforced. Theirs is a tale of last-ditch efforts, incredible courage, and impossible odds with, ultimately, the Battle of the Bulge hanging in the balance. John C. McManus (St. Louis, MO) is a professor of military history at the University of Missouri-Rolla and serves on the editorial board of World War II magazine. Volume I of a trilogy, this historical/magical realism novel is a meditation upon the life and times of Micajah Autry, the author's ancestor who died at the Alamo. Starting with the narrative's frame set in winter 1915, the novel flashes back to the hero's youth when he served with General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. The exciting action includes encounters with Marie Laveau, voodoo queen of New Orleans who becomes Micajah Autry's soulmate and major love interest, a duel with the pirate Jean Lafitte, the painful separation of the lovers, Marie's imprisonment by Pierre Lafitte, her meeting with the depressed and dying Napoleon Bonaparte. The frame of the novel concerns the journey from Beaumont, TX, to San Antonio made by the dying daughter of Micajah Autry in 1915 when she wishes to perform one final ceremony at the Alamo for her heroic father. Along the way she and her care-taker nephew encounter a cast of con artists including claimants to the legend of Jesse James, aspirants to sports stardom, and a man of the cloth. This work is as much homage to writers such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, and W.P. Kinsella as to the heroes of the Texas Revolution as it weaves the satiric, poetic, minimalist and magical realism of these writers into a story which moves in time from the War of 1812 to the New Orleans of our day. The myths and legends clash with the facts as the truth evades us like so many fireflies on a spring evening. This volume contains a prologue and chapters 1-16. Volume II called "The Hero's Return," contains chapters 17-34. Volume III called "Thirteen Days," contains chapters 35-49 and an epilogue. These last two volumes will come out shortly after Volume I.

Volume II deepens our understanding of Marie as she continues her exile in Europe eventually becoming the secretary for Napoleon Bonparte imprisoned by the English on St. Helena. Later she becomes the mistress of Lord Byron before his death in Greece sends her and her children to New Orleans. After many twists and turns, Micajah decides his destiny lies in one final journey to Texas and an old Spanish mission known as the Alamo. The trilogy will conclude with "Thirteen Days" with authenticated history merging with the "what if" of magical realism.

Volume III of the Alamo Trilogy focuses on the 13-day siege at the Alamo and explores the emotional interactions of the main characters--Micajah Autry and David Crockett. All the diverse patterns and plots among the many characters reach a fitting conclusion in the aftermath of the last skirmish on March 6, 1836, but the future also plays a part as the descendants of Micajah Autry complete their journey of expiation and reconcile themselves to the mythic past. Coming down to more contemporary times, the novel finishes with an exploration of the ironies of history as fact, myth, and a hybrid of the two provide whatever comfort they can to the human spirit longing for a peaceful exit from a troubled world.

Mr. Autry has collected his three earlier volumes into a single volume with a few new features such as the preface and the afterward. The trilogy--a post-modern novel of history and magical realism-- focuses on three interlocking stories. First, the frame for the whole series deals with Mary Elizabeth Autry's journey in 1915 from Beaumont, TX, to the Alamo at San Antonio, TX, where her father died on the last day of the siege there in 1836. Accompanying the dying old woman is her grandson and a few folks they pick up along the way where the world is full of liars, cheats, con artists, racists, as well as good and decent folks, sort of like Flannery O'Connor meets Mark Twain. The second story focuses on Micajah Autry and his adventures from the War of 1812 in New Orleans with General Andrew Jackson's forces where Autry meets Marie Laveau and Jean Lafitte. The voodoo queen becomes the love of Autry's life, but their tragic fate complicates and frustrates the fulfillment of their romantic dreams, somewhat like William Faulkner meets James Joyce. The third strand of the novel follows Marie as she seeks consolation for her grief through escaping from the captivity of Pierre Lafitte and attaching herself to Napoleon Bonaparte's imprisonment at St. Helena. Lord Byron and his entourage become a significant part of this section. The three strands come together for a fantastic conclusion during the 13 days of the Alamo siege much like Hemingway might have handled the topic. This novel sticks close to the verifiable facts of the Alamo story, toys with the legends, and explores the magic of "what if" as the epic tale unfolds more about the spirit of love and the capacity of the human heart to transcend the limitations of the here and now for the flights of soul that make life worth living. The cast of characters includes David Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Travis, James Bonham, Andrew Jackson, Rachel Jackson, Micajah Autry, Martha Autry, Jennie Autry, Mary Elizabeth Autry, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, Marie Laveau, Colonel Almonte, Colonel Pena, Santa Anna, and a few surprise guests along the way.

William C. Davis's Three Roads to the Alamo is far and away the best account of the Alamo I have ever read. The portraits of Crockett, Bowie, and Travis are brilliantly sketched in a fast-moving story that keeps the reader riveted to the very last word. -- Stephen B. OatesThree Roads to the Alamois the definitive book about the lives of David Crockett, James Bowie and William Barret Travis--the legendary frontiersmen and fighters who met their destiny at the Alamo in one of the most famous and tragic battles in American history--and about what really happened in that battle.

Identifying The Concepts Of H.C.F. And L.C.M. Of Algebraic Expressions
The impact of vague belief 'Mathematics is hard subject' embedded among almost all parents, guardians and persons inside or outside of the educational ambience in the civil society leads a student to be afraid of the subject. This book is a humble effort to find out some remedials by which our dear pupils can be able to overcome the age old so called "Fear" myth in learning Mathematics. Besides this, the author is also presenting some "Technical Know How" in solving mathematical problems practically, which he faces as a secondary level school teacher day in and day out. There are easy going, genial and tolerant discussions in this book about the problems on major concept: H.C.F. and L.C.M. of Algebraic Expressions which have been arising in the syllabi of W.B.B.S.E. as well as C.I.S.C.E. This book will be useful for the learners of schools and their teachers, B.Ed. students and teachers, curriculum developers, researchers of various levels and those who are interested in learning mathematics.
