This authoritative new biography of the Russian poet and prose writer Boris Pasternak is the first part of a two-volume set, covering the period 1890-1928. Drawing on archives and many eyewitness accounts, Barnes' study sheds light on currently unexplored aspects of Pasternak's character and family background, and his artistic, social and historical environment. He combines biographical investigation with detailed textual analysis of translated quotations in verse and prose to reveal the source of Pasternak's extraordinary writings. The book examines a wide range of topics that include his musical enthusiasm and relations with Scriabin, his philosophical studies, his activities in World War I and his response to the 1917 revolutions, and his stance as a liberal artistic intellectual in the 1920s.

As a retiree, Daniel Magnum experienced a culture shock when he returned to the Philippines. His hometown had prospered with more people, new businesses, new buildings and better landscapes. Most of his friends had passed away. Dan thought that his retirement would be as calm as it could be. He found himself to be hired by his cousin, the City Mayor and experienced different adventures in his life. In his very own community, as a masqueraded Circuit Breaker, he caught a church thief. In his other cousin's faraway ranch community, he caught several cattle rustlers. Dan's job as his cousin's Personal Security Assistant made him solved ambuscades perpetrated by bad men in a different municipality then followed by dealings with a stupid evil boss. He fought and won against the bad guys in a tavern in his city. Dan met another cousin who was about to pay a gang's meal but was subdued on time. He solved a case where bad elements had a fraudulent motive of deception through fake minerals. Magnum was confronted with several ignorant men for a get-rich-scheme. He overcame their wrong ideals. He stopped the modus operandi of a gang in a market place. He saw some action in fighting the bank robbers in his own bank. He won. He solved the crime of his other cousin's patriotic business. He fought hard and won with the government military over a rebel group headed by an astute businessman. As usual, by the request of his cousin, the City Mayor, he was able to discover and won his fight over this fake military checkpoints. He brought them to justice. Daniel Magnum continued his undertakings when he was loaned to another City to settle a difficult drug problem, masquerading as the Circuit Breaker. Dan pretended to be an employee and masqueraded as the Circuit Breaker to save the lives of his community from poisoning their drinking water system. He was sent to another City to settle their daily electric brown-out problem, again as the Circuit Breaker. He was sent to another far-flung City to explore the possibilities of solving a rebel problem. His community was beset with this scary myth which scared the wits out of his people. As the Circuit Breaker, he solved the case. Dan solved the case of a humble threatened worker. Upon the request of his cousin, he overcame the motive of the bad guys in the kidnapping and selling of babies, as the Circuit Breaker. Dan fought the bad guys and their leader from the owner of a circus. Dan was the Circuit breaker when he fought the men who pretended to have discovered diamond's from somebody else's farm property. He solved his brother's case in Illinois, U.S.A. when his brother and his co-employees were accused of robbery. Dan, as he masqueraded as the Circuit Breaker, solved a syndicate problem in the International Airport in Manila, Philippines. He fought as the Circuit Breaker against a gang that was involved in illegal gambling in his City's First Tennis Open Championship. He went to Ontario, Canada to see his sister for a vacation when he encountered a set of bad guys who are experts in blackmail. He won over them.
Railways in the Peak District

Railways in the Peak District

The Peak District has always been a formidable barrier to transport links across it, particularly railways. The first crude horse-drawn tramways fed canals on its eastern and western flanks, but in 1830 – only five years after the Stockton & Darlington Railway opened – a standard gauge line climbed over the top of the Peak District and down the other side on fearsome inclines to connect canals at Cromford and Whaley Bridge. Sheffield and Manchester were connected in 1845 by the first line across the Pennines through the notorious Woodhead Tunnel, followed by a gradual infilling of lines connecting Peak District towns and villages. Some of them became as famous as the Settle–Carlisle route, such were the engineering difficulties of driving a route through the limestone dales. The line between Dore and Chinley was the last main line in England to be driven across the Pennines in two huge tunnels. At its height the Peak District railway system encompassed a narrow gauge light railway for tourists, cable-hauled inclines to export limestone, seven of the UK’s twenty longest railway tunnels, and Britain’s first all-electric main line. The birth of British Railways in 1948 and the subsequent Beeching axe were the death knell for many of these unique railways. Today some of the tracks can still be followed on foot, bicycle or horseback thanks to the Peak District National Park and other leisure organisations. The historic tunnels, viaducts and stations on the most famous routes have been restored and reopened as long-distance footpaths and heritage lines – a renaissance to be enjoyed by today’s tourists.
Poverty and Social Exclusion in Europe

Poverty and Social Exclusion in Europe

There are estimated to be almost 60 million people living in poverty throughout the European Union. This bleak statistic underlines the value of this important book which explores the nature and extent of poverty and social exclusion in six European countries, namely: Austria, Germany, Greece, Norway, Portugal and the UK. The book focuses on four 'life course' groups who might be considered particularly at risk: young adults, lone parents, the sick and disabled, and the retired. The authors show how poverty is the outcome of the interaction between several factors including education, gender and family structure. They emphasise the importance of distinguishing between poverty and non-monetary measures of deprivation and isolation. Although the poor are more at risk of suffering from deprivation, the authors demonstrate that this relationship is more tenuous than many people suppose. Employing rigorous theoretical and methodological analyses they go on to relate their findings to the policy environment in each of the countries, which were specifically chosen to reflect differing welfare systems. In this way the authors compare the impact of government policy on both the level of poverty and social exclusion, and on who is most at risk of experiencing them. Both statistically and in policy terms this book will be essential reading for students and academics of economics and the social sciences, and policy makers at both the national and European level.
