The Culture of English Puritanism 1560-1700

The Culture of English Puritanism 1560-1700

Christopher Durston; Jacqueline Eales

Red Globe Press
1996

The Culture of English Puritanism is a major contribution to the debate on the nature and extent of early modern Puritanism. In their introduction the editors provide an up-to-date survey of the long-standing debate on Puritanism, before proceeding to outline their own definition of the movement. They argue that Puritanism should be defined as a unique and vibrant religious culture, which was grounded in a distinctive psychological outlook and which manifested itself in a set of highly characteristic religious practices. In the subsequent essays, a distinguished group of contributors consider in detail some of the most important aspects of this culture, in particular sermon-gadding, collective fasting, strict observance of Sunday, iconoclasm, and puritan attempts to reform alternative popular culture of their ungodly neighbours. Other contributions chart the channels through which puritan culture was sustained in the 80-year period proceding the English Civil War, the failure of attempts by the puritan government of Interregnum England to impose this puritan culture on the English people, the subsequent emergence of Dissent after 1600

James I has traditionally been portrayed as a foolish and unpleasant man. However, the last two decades have seen a rehabilitation of James I by historians, who have begun to appreciate that in some areas, in particular foreign policy and religion, he pursued sensible policies and achieved a considerable degree of success. Christopher Durston deals with the personality and political ability of the monarch, the court, finance, parliament, foreign policy and religion, including his record in Scotland and the legacies of Elizabeth I. The arguments of the revisionist historians concerning James's relations with his parliaments are examined in detail, as well as the recent `postrevisionist' backlash.

Charles Carlton's biography of the `monarch of the Civil Wars' was praised for its distinctive psychological portrait of Charles I when it was first published in 1983. Challenging conventional interpretations of the king, as well as questioning orthodox historical assumptions concerning the origins and development of the Civil Wars, the book quickly established itself as the definitive biography. In the eleven years since Charles I: The Personal Monarch was published an immense amount of new material on the king and his reign have emerged and yet no new biography has been written. Professor Carlton's second edition includes a substantial new preface which takes account of the new work. Addressing and analysing the furious historiographical debates which have surrounded the period, Carlton offers a fresh and lucid perspective. The text and bibliography have been thoroughly updated.

The first full-scale study of the rule of Cromwell’s major-generals over England and Wales during 1655 and 1656. This is a period which had a dramatic impact upon contemporaries and has remained a powerful symbol of military rule down to the present day. Contains chapters on the three most important aspects of the major-generals' work: the collection of the decimation tax; the attempt to improve the security of the regime; and the struggle to build the 'Godly Nation'. Concludes with an investigation of the 1656 election and the major-generals subsequent unexpected fall from power. Fills a major gap in the historiography of Cromwellian England.

Political Moments is a collection of quotes taken from the novel 'A Dangerous God, bastards of angels' and other works. It covers areas such as war, politics, evolution, free will, religion, humanism, tyranny, liberty, economics.2. Aggression is logic. It is Order, not Chaos.3. Free Will as Equality enables evolution since it allows the creative to excel or decay by its own failures and successes9. Equality is not found between power and powerlessness. It is found between suffering and empathy.FW27. Self-will expresses itself in only two ways....as Free Will ...and as Brutality. There is only power over oneself or power against others. The supposed Self Will or Free Will of Power is simply a will re-entering the herd with a larger stick. It means nothing.R62. Do not curse the Little Devil so much..for it is not the God which creates the best Christian but, rather, the Lion....R125. The mental diseases of chemical imbalances..thus wanders Evolution.

A second collection of quotes, ideas and thoughts taken from various works of christopher dutton but primarily focuses on the nature and conflicts of 'meaning' as an Individual human being and as a integral of Society...for example...757.Man, itself, was not meant to be a horde, a swarm, an all-consuming collective.....indeed just as entropy as a universal law causes dispersion of energy and matter throughout ......so, too, evolution of earth, as a natural law or process, requires expansive diversity.Men, instead, has become the virus of Nature herself...seeking to destroy its Host and the very mechanism of both its beginning and subsequent end(s) ...that of evolution itself.770. Over our thousands of years, one sees this 'drive' to 'fill in the causality spaces' between a beginning to an end to create an understandable ( and therefore repeatable) series of events..ie shit seeds, fruit next year in same place...or drought last year, much rain next year with only the accidental drowning of an infant as a plausable difference thus yielding a belief in a necessity human sacrifice. This comes naturally at first from a mind surviving by repeating 'steps' to yield desired results......the 'problem' became when the 'mind' became impatient and obsessed with its ability to understand and complete and thus yielded to conjecture as actual truth......."" The average intellect prefers to be wrong in its beliefs than to have no beliefs at all" Rousseau ...the human mind is imperfect in all things except in its denial of its own imperfection....779.Power is 'symbolized' by civilizations' structures and icons. A dominance by violent physical, emotional, sexual acts or their innuendos. There must be both 'fear' and 'lust' involved. There must be 'pull' and 'push'; negativity and positivity, for the 'power of civilization' to flow.

Princes, Pastors and People traces the many changes in religious life that took place in the turbulent years of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries. It is designed to make accessible to readers much of the most recent research, and to guide them through the major historical controversies of the last twenty-five years:* the causes of the English Reformation* the popularity of the Elizabethan Protestant Church* the impact of the Laudian innovations of the 1630s* the Puritan attempt to control popular culture and belief.By adopting a thematic rather than chronological approach, the book is also able to chart the long-term developments across the period in key areas such as doctrinal and liturgical change, the role of the clergy, and the importance of religion in the everyday lives of people.

Christmas, the year's most revered holiday, has long been associated with joy, peace, and gift-giving. But for just as long, though largely forgotten or overlooked to maintain a positive festive mood and to keep the holiday "kid-friendly," were depictions of the season's darker side that could also encompass tales of horror. Deadly monsters stalking the night during the Yuletide season; brutal serial killers who dress as Santa Claus while committing their gruesome deeds; and scary ghost stories connected to the season are all Christmas horror tropes we have seen in short stories, books, and cinema - and all are represented in this tome as Wild Hunt Press now takes a step into the darker side of Yule. The above Christmas horror themes are brought to you via four original short stories by Christofer Nigro, the author of the teen werewolf novel series Nero (beginning with Nero: The Beast Emerges), also published by Wild Hunt Press. And since no Christmas horror anthology would be complete without a tale featuring Santa's favorite Yuletide monstrosity, a short story featuring the Krampus by Dustin Dreyling, the author of the daikaiju horror novel series Primordial Soup, provided as a free PDF download by Wild Hunt Press as a gift to readers on Christmas 2020, is included here for the first time in a published tome as a bonus to Yule horror-lovers. Rated Ex (Explicit) for graphic violence, strong language, sexuality & sexual violence, intense themes, and disturbing imagery. Sensitive readers are strongly cautioned.

This volume includes legendary Christmas nightmares from folklore and classic literature descending upon unwitting victims and giving them the worst, most bloody holiday experience imaginable in four original short stories that you should most certainly not read during the family gathering beside the hearth. Not only has the Krampus returned for more seasonal mayhem, but you will also run afoul of two other horrors from Germanic folklore to haunt the Christmas season: the human-eating winter ogress Gryla and the man-slaughtering feline known as the Yule Cat. And what volume of Christmas terror would be complete without a certain famous trio of Ghosts to teach harsh lessons to those who need it most for the holidays? As in Volume 1, these short tales of holiday horror are brought to you courtesy of Christofer Nigro, the author of the teen werewolf novel series Nero (beginning with Nero: The Beast Emerges), also published by Wild Hunt Press. As a bonus, this volume reprints the short story "Nero: A Holiday Haunting," featuring the young lycanthrope Mike Nero dealing with a holiday-based horror of his own; and a new flash fiction from the pen of Dustin Dreyling, author of Wild Hunt Press's Primordial Soup kaiju horror series. Rated Ex (Explicit) for Graphic Violence, Strong Language, Intense Themes, and Disturbing Imagery. Some of the material in this book may not be suitable for sensitive readers, so reader discretion is strongly advised.

College rule (also known as medium ruled paper) is the most common lined paper in use in the United States. It is generally used in middle school through to college and is also popular with adults. This is a good choice for teen or adult notebooks and composition books (known as exercise books outside the US).
